Are gimmicks in commercials really necessary?

I don't see the point in gimmicks in commercials. I mean yeah its funny to watch but its not selling me the product. If I see a burger on tv that looks appetizing I am going to want that burger. If I see a hot guy/girl eating it I going to think they are hot but it doesn't make me want a burger. So is there really any points in gimmicks in commercials?

    While conventions in commercials are generic, it is only trying to establish association in your mind, however subliminal.

    A fat person eating a burger is going to make you associate burgers with obesity, unhealthy eating, while a hot person eating one you're less likely to think that and only think of how tasty and good a burger would be at that moment.

    You may say that you don't think like that but the majority of the population is quite open to these influences, however subliminal they are in the mind.

          Depends what they are advertising really. However people have a right to buy the product. We all know that commercials are often lies or greatly exaggerated. Unless its lie about medical things.

            Most commercials are lies or greatly exaggerated, even about medical things.

            Even the medical system is about money, everything that's commercially broadcast to an audience is about money.

            People in advertising are no different to lawyers or bankers, going straight to hell.

    If they didn't work do you really think that they would continue to do it?
    A great looking burger might not get your attention, but a great looking girl certainly should. Those ad people won't keep their jobs very long if their ads do not produce the desired effect, so just assume they are a great deal better at what they do, than you will ever be.
    I'm not saying I like those ads any more than you do, but let's face it; I like seeing pretty girls doing ANYTHING, even eating a burger.

      If they believed it worked yes. A lot of things have been proven to not be that helpful but until proven otherwise people still do it. Also I never said the commercials do not have the desired affect. I was wondering if the gimmicks are necessary since as I said "If you see a appetizing looking burger. You are going to want that burger." However if a hot chick/guy is eating it I think you would be more focused on the hot chick not the burger.

        My point, and I'm sorry that I didn't make it clearer, is that I wouldn't even look at a burger ad without the girls. Well maybe, if I had the munchies.....but still for most of us horn dogs and bitches; eye candy attracts the eye.

          So you believe its more to catch your eye rather than promote the product and the product is promoting itself correct? I kind of think with my stomach though if their is food on tv it usually just makes me hungry.
