Are all musicians destined to the same fate?

It seems to me that most, if not all long-lived famous musicians seem to end their careers in a downward spiral which seems to start with them becoming loud with thier politics and/or some other off-putting social commentary. Unless they die at the height of popularity, it seems this is their fate.

Anyone else think so?

Yes, I agree. It seems to happen to a lot of them. 28
No, I don't think so. 20

I'm going to live a long and pointless life.
Nothing really makes me excited or happy. I just live through each day trugging along..
Id love to have a high point to spiral down from. Im always at the bottom. Lonely. No job. Small income. But trying to learn about this world and how to use it to my advantage but everywhere I go, i just get told I can't be what I dream to be. Happy, successful, live in a nice home, and own a business.
But... Ill just be alone. Dark. And live in a dirty part of town. My destiny.
Karma really is a bitch. I shouldn't have kissed Morgan in highschool...I'm sorry hannah. :(
I know its been three years and I need to stop stealing your shoes. But I need you back. I'm falling apart. I wrote you a love song
    Come back to me baybeh!!!!!

You didn't hear about the quite ones because they didn't get the media attention. That story isn't going to make much money.

  • What'sMyName?

You only hear about the one's who fuck up, that's all the media wants. There's plenty of musicians who haven't, and will never, go down that path

    • They USE the media to start spouting off at the mouth. It's not like they're trying to go about their business privately.

It seems you're referring to famous musicians, which make up an incredibly small percentage of musicians out there.

Anyway, I think that only applies to the fame-seeking, egocentric types...which is exactly what most pop stars are. I know of plenty of great and relatively famous bands that gradually winded down and shifted their attentions without causing a scene.

    • Well, yes, that would be why I put "long-lived famous musicians" in the description.

    No.

I know very successful musicians that live clean healthy lives.

One of my favorite rock bands from when I was younger is a good example - Styx. Some members of the band got heavily into drugs and sex. One member is HIV positive. One died from alcoholism.

    But not all of them.
The original lead singer (Dennis DeYoung) is well known for living clean. He never got into drugs, alcohol, smoking, or cheating.

Another musician I greatly admire is John Michael Talbot.
He gave up a career with a popular folk band named Mason Profitt to follow religious music. He saw what drugs and alcohol was doing to some musicians who fell into the trap and he chose to go the other way.

The troubles you mention are ALL self-made. Therefore it is not a written-in-stone destiny, but a choice people make.

Tom Waits hasn't. Neither has Dylan, Chuck Berry, Paul Weller...well....most musicans.

  • Who has this happened too?
I don't know if it's because I'm running a fever or not, but I honestly can't think of any right now.
Could you throw me a bone and list a few examples of who you think have crossed that line?
