Anybody here had serious surgery and what was your experience like?

I'm quite interested in anything medical and surgical, and was just curious to hear people's first hand experiences with having surgery. Was it emergency? What was it for? What was the recovery like and how does the scar look now? I had plastic surgery on my right cheek when I was 2 after a small dog decided to chow down on my face. I barely remember the experience and I have a small scar today, about 1 and a half cm long and barely noticable. Its sensitive to the touch even now, 17 years after the surgery. I'm supposed to have a septoplasty done on my nose to reconstruct the nasal passages as it healed skew after I got it broken over a year ago and now I have trouble breathing. Has anyone else had serious surgery and what was it like? And for the love of god, don't comment with something like "no I've never had surgery" because in that case I couldn't care. I'm looking for experiences.

When I was 5 or 6, I had a burst appendix followed by a bilateral hernia. I don't remember a whole lot about either.

The appendix removal left three scars, in a diagonal line down my torso. The hernia left two larger ones near my hip bones.

I've had dental surgeries done when I was a child. Can that count?

  • I had an issue with my heart when I was born. Not entirely sure on what the problem was but both my father and mother told me so and it was apparently serious.

    Not sure if that counts.

I dislocated my elbow and broke it pretty seriously years ago. Had to get it set in the hospital, went into the emergency room I think. I was pretty much knocked out when they put it back into place. I remember feeling very cold and sick afterwards.

My other elbow was pretty badly damaged too, bruising stayed in the area for a month or two after. Counldn't feed myself the first few days as I couldn't move my other elbow much. Was spooky.

Find out later, it's still pretty busted and they have to pop the joint out again, and scrape out bone fragments. They had to put screws in there also which is a weird experience even today.

It's all fixed, but it's pretty weak. I can feel the screws in one place, and the scar has an odd thing about it. on the underside of my elbow right by the scar I have all feeling, but above it for about an inch or so, there is none.

This is when I totally agree with plastic surgery and am glad there are surgeons who can do it.

I've had surgery twice. The first time was to get my wisdom teeth out. No big deal. Everything went fine and I barely remember it.

About a year and a half ago I had an unscheduled c-section. It wasn't exactly an emergency, but it would have become one if I didn't act fast. The baby was tangled in his cord. The procedure was quick. The recovery was long and hard, especially with new baby. I stayed in the hospital for about 3 days and it took nearly two months to feel strong again. Although that was also coupled with the whole giving birth thing.

The scar is still a little painful but it isn't very noticeable despite being about eight inches long.

I can't believe women opt for c sections. It isn't an easy recovery and it is very hard on the body.
