Am i the only one scared of the republican party?

I am an American, and politically independent. But watching the Republican convention last night really disturbed me.

I mean, I agree that there are way too many stupid liberals in the US, and that they are part of the reason our country is in trouble.

But is it right for the current president and others in his party to focus so much on the negative? What about a vision for the future?

They seem to be focused on "patriotism" and "country before everything" (deuchland uber alles??) rather than constructively solving our problems and, more importantly bridging gaps between our different viewpoints. They picked a yokel for vice president who's main qualification seems to be that she can "field dress a moose", whatever that means. Meanwhile, she doesn't believe in evolution or think that humans are causing global warming, and she thinks that the way to break the US dependence on oil is to drill for more oil.

I just don't get where they seem to be coming from. Am I the only one hoping they lose big time come November?

Republicans right now are too small to filibuster. The Democrats are more often getting their way. So if anything terrible happens from here on you cannot blame the Republicans. Personally I belive that government as a whole has gotten very arrogant and I find democrats to be very guilty of that.

Yes, it is completely normal to be afariad of Republicans. Look what they've done to the economy the last 8 years. this country is in dire strites due them... I am so glad we don't have to be afraid anymoe becuse if the Republicans had one for four more years in The White House, I shutter to think of what kind of shambles this country would be in at the end of another republican term.

  • Written by a liberal. Global warming has never been proven. Whether or not we spend everything on a new energy source it will still be decades before we become completly dependant on it so whats wrong with us producing our own oil and not relying on oil from Canada and South America? You can bash Palin all you like but what little experience she has is still more then Jesus Christ Obama Super Star has.

    • also, global warming has been proven. Republicans who denied global warming 10 years ago are now saying (like Sarah Palin) that it exists but is not man-made. But no one is denying it anymore.

        • where is your proof that it's a hoax? because for my money i would rather work towards preventing a situation which may not be occurring, and along the way maybe reduce or eliminate fossil fuel usage and in general develop a healthier life style for humans, then sit around and call something a hoax just so that we can go on with business as usual, and (if it is not a hoax) wait till the shit hits the proverbial fan.

          Comment Hidden ( show )
    • hey chris! good to see you!!

I wrote this post. I don't consider emphasizing alernative energy sources over oil as being liberal, i consider it being common sense.

Of course Sarah Palin and others want us to continue to drill baby drill. if I came from alaska I would too. Oil is a major part of the Alaskan economy, and the tax revenues from oil support the alaskan govt and infrastructure as well (well, maybe that and a lot of earmarked fed money).

But we have to be smart to outdo our adversaries and we can't let special interests hold us back.

Many have called for independence from oil within 10 years. They think this can be accomplished. It will be painful for many people who depend on oil production and refinement for their economies. But in the long run, everyone will be a hell of a lot more prosperous, and America and the rest of the western world will be much stronger as a result.

I don't think wanting that has anything to do with being liberal as much as wanting to see the US and other countries remain strong and with a bright future.

  • How can anyone not see that both candidates suck? Neither one of them will do a good job, Palin is the only good thing worth looking into. Obama and Mccain are very different, but I think the best bet is Obama, because Mccain would ultimately destroy the economy, atleast Obama would stall that from happening for another 4 years.

  • Yeah man. Even myself, being a Democrat, think there are too many crazy liberals out there. And I don't know how you feel, but I conclude that BOTH of these parties scare me. I like Barack Obama, and WILL vote for him no matter what this coming November. But thing is, both fumble completely on the issues and can't seem to trust one or the other 100%% or near 100%%. (I guess you can't trust a politician 100%% because...well they're politicians lol)

But anyways, from what I have read and seen on TV about the RNC, I am more scared of their party, than the Democrats, and I don't like and don't agree with most Repubs. That is why I am voting Barack in November. I like his attitude and motivation. I also love how he can excite his fan base; and hopefully they will show up on that day in November, and vote him in!

    • Like you I am more afraid of the GOP although I am also scared of the democrats.

I will either vote for Obama or not vote at all.

I think McCain is a great man and would be a good president, but the people he has surrounded himself with including his moose hunting VP make me want to puke.

Then again, living in New York means that my vote will be meaningless anyway because there is absolutely ZERO chance that Obama will not win New York.

      • Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. New York is so Liberal, that I can't this state going to John McCain! I mean, with the New York City vote and all the major cities in this state, the state will surely go to Obama.

An example of what I just said was the 2004 elections. For some reason, my parents were going to vote for Bush. I told them "Don't even bother, Kerry will win this state." They acted like I was nuts and told me it would help Bush with the popular vote. But they didn't quite understand the electoral vote and that New York was too liberal, and that the state would go to Kerry. So, basically, I will still vote for Obama, even though we know he will win this state. It's just that it is my first time voting in a national election, and I really wanna be a part of it.

And I think you would agree, that, both parties are shit...it's just that we gotta weed out the better of two evils...and I think that Obama is the pick.

And also, please tell me...why in the world did John McPain pick Palin? LOL

I am 59, open minded, and am SCARED of both parties. Obama is an inexperienced kid with the gift of gab, if he has a writer to hold the cue cards. McCain admits he has no knowledge of economics,,one of our biggest problems, which, by the way is affecting ALL world currency now. I am afraid either one will run our economy even faster into the ground. I planted an extra big " victory garden",, for fear of economic collapse, in the neat future. I am not joking a bit,,,it is going toget a lot worse than most imagine.

      • I think they were focusing on " Patriotism" in the first part of the convention because the American loves it and to be honest I myself had tears in my eyes several times while watching the convention last night. I think the first lady gave a good speech last night, but she is definitely not the speaker Hillary Clinton is.

Well at least we have the debates to look forward to the end of this month that is when we should get a good feeling for the candidate's thoughts on are countries problems and how to fix them.

        • personally i think some (but not most) democrats are NOT patriotic and would prefer it if the US were not powerful. In that sense, I trust the republicans to better conduct foreign policy (although i think Bush handled the Iraq war incompetently). I believe we should ruthlessly crush our enemies, particularly the islamic terrorists who want to put us all back into the 15th century. And I also believe that those who do not want the US to be a power in the world should not be serving in government. They are entitled to their opinions, but they should not be leading our politics.

on the other hand, I see the republicans as reinforcing the us vs. them mentality, meaning us republicans vs. everyone else, and I find that troubling. It's just more of the same that we have had since the 1990's. and personally, i'm not only sick of it, i believe it will be the destruction of the US if not checked.

like you, i am looking forward to the debates.

US citizens are the only ones that live in a highly developed country and still fall for
their politicians acting like having some idealistic motives behind their politics.

They are also the only ones that seem to be oblivious of the fact that governments fight for interests beyond the ones of the country they are supposed to serve. Although the signs are more obvious than other(highly developed) countries.

US citizens also don't seem to understand that the course of their country is not writing history but repeating it.
No more needs to be said.

          • I agree with you on your statement about the Republicans being better at conducting foreign policy. That is one thing, I liked about both George Bush senior and junior was their very tactful way of dealing with threats from abroad. I believe in the Iraq war it was necessary, and I believe the world is a safer place because of it. I realize we are still fighting over there but casualties are way down and a lot of progress has been made. We have shown those people what freedom is and I think the citizens of Iraq (at least most of them) are very happy with what has happened since the war began.

I understand your feeling about the "us verses them mentality" and agree that we have to be very diplomatic when it comes to dealing with foreign affairs. The world is a scary place right now, and we need good competent leadership to lead our country. I am politically independent just like you, I just want the best leadership for our country be it Democrat or Republican.

            • "The world is a scary place right now, and we need good competent leadership to lead our country."

agreed. and the worst thing is that not only have we the US not had good leadership from either party, but there has been bad leadership throughout the entire world.

The US, Russia, China, France,Israel, Spain, and many other countries are now and/or have been lead by small-minded narrow-visioned mediocre people not up to the task of handling the world's situation.

              Am i being too negative?

              Comment Hidden ( show )
      • Well, I have been watching the Republican convention with great interest and so far am not to impressed. I hate to say it, but I think John MCcain is too old for the job and his running mate is to inexperienced for the job of vice president. I am going to wait until after Sarah Palin's speech tonight before I pass to much judgement on her, it should be interesting.

To be honest about it, I am not to enthused with either party but the way it stands right now my vote is going to the democratic ticket.
