Am i obese or just overweight?

Body fat percentage is a more realistic way to get your true health stats. So I took them. I made sure I did it right and did it several times. My body fat percentage is definitely 35%.

I'm a female 5'4 and 147 pounds with a BMI of 25.7(basically 26) so I'm considered "overweight" by BMI. But with a fat percentage of 35%, I am classified as obese. I guess it's central obesity or is it borderline obesity in general? Or am I incorrect and it just means overweight?

Clothing stores are horrible with their clothes lately because of vanity sizing so that doesn't help me figure out what I really am. I'm fitting into size 8-10's/medium shirts(US sizes). It's kind of sickening.

So anyway, do you think with a BF of 35% I am obese? Thank you kindly.

You're overweight 20

  • No matter what you are "classified" as, you should try to lose weight. You'd be amazed at how much better you feel when you do.

So if people tell you you're only overweight, is that an excuse to shove more cookies down your gullet?

    • No, I'm a vegan so I don't eat cookies anyway. I'm fully raw and monitor calories but thanks for insulting me. I already lost 15 pounds and lost 1.5 this week. My goal is to be 105 pounds but I just want to know where I stand now.

I'm 5'5 and last summer I was in the 140's weight wise, a size 8 in jeans, and a medium in shirts. It's NOT obese, but it is slightly overweight.

According to BMI index (which is kind of arbitrary anyway as person with high muscle mass could have a high BMI) you are just a little overweight, which is nothing to worry about. '

You are not obese, body fat percentage is in the upper end of overweight range.

How does it matter? You could classify yourself at Captain Chubby and it would make no difference. Your weight and health situation would still be exactly the same.

If you are happy with that situation, then don't worry about it. If your not happy then make a change. But who gives a crap if you are technically fat, overweight, obese, or anything else?

Fat percentage is more accurate, so yes it's obesity.

You're right, body fat % is a much better measure than BMI. BMI ignores bone density and muscle mass. Technically, a woman with over 32% body fat is considered "obese."

I have the opposite problem. I'm fit and fairly muscular. My BMI is borderline "overweight" and if I put on a couple more pounds of muscle I'll be in the "overweight" range. But my body fat averages around 12% and my bone mass is above average. So, BMI is a bogus measure for me.
