Am i normal? help! (mental health)

OK, Sorry guys this may be a long one.

So I'm the one who submitted a poll about is it normal that God talks to me everyday. I know the majority of people in the poll said I should see a psychiatrist. Well I went to see him and now he wants me to take anti-psychotics.

I don't know if I want to take them though. I mean I feel I AM normal it's just I can communicate with the universe. Considering we all live in the universe, isn't it normal that some humans can see and feel it. I mean there are plenty of people in life who God talks to but they aren't deemed as mad.

I have a degree, a job, I've had a partner for a decade. I pay rent, bills, drive a car, buy food at the supermarket - all the normal things.

I don't like going out in public much, it does scare me but I force myself to do it. I only hear voices every now and again, only hallucinate every now and again and God talks to me mainly in pictures. I've read on the internet that most sane people in life hallucinate audibly and visually at least a few times in their lives.

Is it really such a bad thing that I think the universe talks to me in everything, such as through the pages that are shown to me in stumbleupon, or when I walk into a shop without many people and think God did that for me.

I read anti-psychotics decrease your brain size by 10%. It seems to me that getting rid of an extra-sensory part of your brain is stupid.

What should I do?

Ps I didn't ask him for his specific diagnosis so I'm unsure what he think my actual "problem" is.

No. Don't take the drugs and carry on as you are. 33
Yes take the drugs and become dumbed down. 24

    This poll is biased.

You assume drugs will "dumb you down" when dealing with mental illness.

That is a fallacy. When you take the RIGHT drug for a mental condition it helps you be you, without the added problems.

ALL drugs have negative side effects. He has a degree in sciency stuff, I think he would know even better than you or I.

He said he had a degree but didn't state what it was in, or what type of degree.

"Sciency stuff" doesn't mean he knows anything about medicine or pharmacology. In fact a science-based degree may have nothing to do with chemicals, such as "computer science".

So the knee-jerk reaction that all medicines will "dumb you down" is in fact an uneducated one. Yes all medicines have side-effects, BUT not the same side effects. And if your mind does feel numbed, you may be taking the wrong one.

If you want information for any particular medication you can find it online at the manufacture's website. (It's a legal requirement for any advertisement to include the complete information on the medication).

Or if you have many medications you want you review, you may want to consider investing in a current edition of the PDR - the "Physician's Desk Reference" which includes complete information (including side effects and interactions) of all current prescription drugs.

If anything that book will have much more reliable data than just an opinion from someone with an unnamed "sciency degree".

He commented on my post and said what his degrees were in. Check your facts before you start saying I'm wrong with what I said. Don't try to tell me I don't know what I'm talking about when he CLEARLY stated his focus'. And I'm sure being in his area, he knows people and has talked to people about the drugs and side effects and I'm more than sure he studied them online at least since he is afraid of the side affects he mentioned to someone else.

            I'd prefer seeing actual degrees.

Hell I've taken chemistry and biology in college too. Even microbiology. That doesn't make me a pharmacologist.

            • Do you need a photocopy of my degree for some reason? I studied Zoology and got my MSc in evolutionary sciences. So no I didn't do pharmacology but I can read and research the internet which is how I know what the side effects are. Also I had a friend who was on them and he used to sit there and drool. He has since changed his medication but I still think and he thinks that they dumb you down. That's how they work - they stop certain parts of your brain from being responsive to the things that "normal" people don't sense.

depends on what the condition does to you.

some effects are good some are bad. with the proper treatment you can often reduce negative effects while retaining good.

anti psychotics do not make you dumb and they save lives. Only you can decide if they are right for you, but don't believe they make you dumb. I take abilify every day and it really helps me. Try it and then decide if you want to continue taking it. Not everyone wants to be normal

Seriously though, Ask the pharmacist about the medication you're taking. That's their job to know the works about the medications. I work at a pharmacy and if I knew what med it was, I would ask them myself. =) Hopefully you can get this cleared up.

So what does the universe tell you? It speaks in a language that more and more people are remembering. Most have forgotten. You are not crazy, you are human. Congratulations!

I have met many people like you and they all tell me the same thing about myself. If you can pick up on this I will be very impressed. You are thirsty for answers, trust that the universe will provide them when you are ready. Don't stifle your growth. Embrace the challenge and love it.

I don't think anyone can make that decision for you. You have to feel comfortable with who you are and the behaviour you portray. Many people live with mental health issues throughout their lives and do not take medication and in fact most of their friends and family may not even be aware.

It is your decision as to whether you continue your life in this way, you appear clear about was is 'acceptable' behaviour to most people are likely to be able to present yourself appropriately if you wish to.

Otherwise its whether you feel you need help to manage those aspects of your personality that make you question your 'normality' (however you want to interpret that). In which case you might opt for the medical support.

      • I never got dystonia but I had severe jerking... and felt tired all the time... I never knew about the 10% brain reduction but it helped my delusions and hallucinations... they are very scary I was 17 years old when I began taking them and now im 19 I would like to get off of them but my doctor won't let me... because I get really bad if I don't take them..

God? But you said you speak to the universe? So you don't mean a personified God, you mean the fact that you're just in touch with the world around you and can interpret it in your mind as to what it wants in a way?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • Yes I call it God because that's the only way I can describe it. But I am also a trained and experienced scientist. I absolutely believe in the big bang, I have a very good idea of how chemistry, physics and especially biology work. I believe "God" is everything in the universe, the energy that created the big bang and the energy that came from it, every single quark and every exploding star. Every drop of water and every person alive. I just call it God because there's no other word great enough to describe the universe.

Well I am 100% on the same page as you! This is also how I describe the universe, as my God, or Krishna in other words I suppose. I think you are normal. I don't think being in touch with the universe is odd. We are all part of it and in a sense it does have it's own voice. Maybe you're hearing something of the "whole". Or maybe you just want to understand it more and are psyching yourself out.

No problem. :) If the universe talking to you isn't getting in the way of your day to day life, if it isn't something that worries or bothers you, and if it isn't something that you can deal with, why bother taking the drugs?

Take ODC for example, it's not actually called OCD if it doesn't directly affect your life or cause you anxiety. I use that definition for any sort of habit or issues someone has with their self. Without negative effects or anxiety, what's the point in "fixing" it or changing yourself?

If you are happy with the way your life is going, don't take the meds. If you think you have a problem, then I'd give them a try. I would say that anyone who talks to God is crazy, but its their choice and I wouldn't give them meds for it.

People tend to assume that something they cannot explain must be "God".

Anyway it's completely up to you to try the anti-psychotics, they might do more bad than good, they might not.
