Am i a racist person for trying to celebrate my culture

So tomorrow is the Puerto Rican and Hispanic Day parade in my town. Lots of different Hispanics have their flags out and have clothes that show their pride in their race. I'm also Hispanic, and used to have my flag out, but due to my pale skin and inability to speak Spanish, people don't believe I'm Hispanic. I've been called racist and have been threatend with violence for "pretending to be Hispanic." I don't have that pride in my race like I used to. I'm kind of jaded and questioning what's the point in having pride in ones race? My own race doesn't want me.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

According to mainstream politics and media, it is only racist if you are white.

    • Everyone thinks I'm white. I'm thinking about going back to the tanning salon so I can look Hispanic. Is that a good idea?

Well since it has been proven to cause cancer and UV damage is responsible for 90% of aging signs (not even exaggerating) I would suggest a quality spray tan that you test on a small area to make sure you don't turn orange. And probably applied by a professional too.

Well technically you probably are white with predominantly European heritage

That doesn't make you any less Hispanic, Hispanic isn't a race it's a culture. There are white Hispanics, you are one of them, as well as black Hispanics and mixed Hispanics etc.

Latin America is the most racially diverse region on the planet. America (as in "US of A" America) is just stupid and makes "Speaking Spanish" a race, and it's the ONLY country that does that.

Don't feel like you have to tan or change your appearance in order to look "more Hispanic". There is no one way for Hispanics to look, you know your heritage and that is what matters.

Race as a method of human classification is a ridiculous concept. Celebrate your culture by all means.
America is really fucked up by everyone having to belong to some race or other.

well jose what can i say. In oklahoma white people are on the indian roles and get benefits . then there are these indians dark as mud that are artists and get sued if they call their art indian art. Durham is of Cherokee descent, but is not allowed to call himself an "Indian artist" according to the federal Indian Arts and Crafts Act. Signed by President Bush in November 1990, the legislation stipulates that a person cannot be called an "Indian artist" unless he or she is a member of an Indian tribe or certified as an artist by a tribe. Following the enactment of the legislation, two galleries devoted exclusively to Indian art, one in San Francisco, the other in Santa Fe, N.M., canceled exhibitions of Durham's work.

Why do you want change for people who really dont care about you? Be yourself, still celebrating your cultures and don't mind them-they not worth of your trying be "more "Hispanic. Changing ypur carnation isn't a good idea. I hope that help you make a decision.

There's nothing wrong with being proud of your people, and there's nothing wrong with only speaking English, especially in America. "racist" is just a buzzword, and more often then not, an excuse.
