All hell is about to break loose!

I work for a mid-size accounting firm. About 50 people are employed here. Last week the firm hired a new CPA and placed him in a vacant supervisor position. Which means this man now supervises me and six others. The man is black. The only black supervisor at the firm. Find with me and four of the five co-workers of mine. Not fine with the white redneck asshole we have to put up with. What really seems to piss this guy off is the fact that he has to work under a black man. A black man who is light years away from the rest of us as far as accounting knowledge and experience is concerned. He is also charming and patient and very forthcoming when it comes to sharing his extensive professional experience for the better of all of us in his unit. But the redneck remains bitter and resentful. Talks behind our boss's back in a very nasty, racial way. So the rest of us have decided to go to the general manager with our complaints and try and get this asshole fired. But I wonder if maybe we should talk to our supervisor first? Under the circumstances the others disagree. A black friend in another unit at the firm disagrees too. Majority will rule here. Are we taking a normal, logical step?

Haven't you got the balls to just tell the "red neck" cretin to shut his fucking mouth and that you aren't interested in what he has to say?
Seems like a simpler, better solution, to me.

If I were you, I would probably talk to the supervisor first, at the very least just to let him know whats going in and why you are going to the general manager. Have all the employees in your unit write statements as well, so that it can be properly documented.

You are taking the best approach. Nobody can change the redneck's resentfulness, and it is only eroding the group morale. Other problems could be dealt with better within the group, but not this. If you get the big guns on this, he will be fired sooner, or reassigned to a dead end position.

Go with the black friend's advice. He knows that it is a waste of time to try to reason with a prejudice fool. I think he is telling you the most expedient way to solve the problem. The GM would never risk offending a good man like your boss. He'll drop a nuke on the redneck bastard. For sure.

This seems so PC... Why can't you talk to the problem first? Or, ignore him? Disassociate yourself from him?
