Age of consent and the internet

On the internet, sites that deal with sexual situations require the user to be 18 years old in order to access it. As such, 18 is considered the 'Internet Age of Consent'. Of course, those under 18 can and do access them anyway, but this in itself brings up an interesting debate.

Throughout the world, the age of consent varies. In the United States alone, it varies from 16-18 by state.

This leads to the strange situation where somebody can be technically breaking the law for looking at something, say, a picture, that would be legal for them to actually do.

This is a conundrom. Where I live, the legal age of consent is 17. A 17-year-old, as such, can have consensual sex with somebody who is at least 17 years old, yet it would be illegal for them to look at a picture of the exact same thing occurring.

What is your opinion on the 'Internet Age of Consent'?

'Internet Age of Consent' should remain 18. 116
'Internet Age of Consent' should be a different, constant age. 45
'Internet Age of Consent' should be whatever age the user's area has. 121
'Internet Age of Consent' should be abolished. 265

I think you're getting confused with the age of consent compared to the considered age of a legal adult, but you raise some valid points.

Most sites choose 18+ as it is the considered age of an adult, world wide, not just because it is the age of consent in the United States.

Agreed, the age of consent here in Australia is 16, but does that mean they should be allowed to view sexually explicit material or topics made for adults?

Or should the internet considered age be bumped up to 21+ as in the United States? Interesting question.

Um... if the age of consent is sixteen, what's the problem with them viewing sexually explicit material and topics made for adults? If it's legal for sixteen year olds to have sex with adults, what's the problem with them viewing sexually explicit material?

Exactly this. Legally, to access porn or buy pornography you MUST be 18 years old, according to Australian censorship laws, even though the age of consent here is 16. But one must ask, why is it that you must be 18 to buy pornography but 16 to have sex? Same with, you can sex at 16, but can't buy alcohol or cigarettes until your 18. Maybe 16 is too young to have sex.

That's a really weird censorship law. What age do teens legally become adults in Australia? I personally think the legal age of consent should be the same as when you're legally an adult.

Haha, you're not wrong there. 18 is when you're legally recognized as an adult here, but the age of consent is 16? It is weird isn't it? I agree with you about the age of consent should be the same as when you're legally recognized as an adult. But then in that case, the age of consent would be 21 in the United States

No, the age of consent here in the US is 18- unless the law's changed recently and I was completely unaware of it. The only thing that should be restricted to 18 year olds is alcohol, since the drinking age is 21.

Age of consent is a load of crap. Early on, the church (who themselves never followed the rules they put in place in order to maintain a moral and just society) placed upon society rules about how to act, what is acceptable, and influenced the powers that be across the world to adopt the same structure. I have been having sex since I was 13. I was involved with experimentating with friends, both male and female as early as 7 or so. In the animal kingdom they breed when the female starts to menstrate. It's what it's for. Why should we be any different? It's nature, it's the bodies way of saying I'm ready, come get some. Sex is instinctual. No one teaches animals how to do it. Sex is one of mans most urges. They kill for it. Take it if it isn't easily obtained. Do anything to get it. And the females play on this. From even before puberty they know their body and what it means can get them anything. They hold it out and take it back. Use us with the illusion of letting us get it. It's a game on both sides. Ever wonder why the good girls go for the worst of the scum they can find? Why daddies little angel is with an abusive, gun toting, gang banging brother? Survival of the fittest is why. He can fend off most challengers for her affection and she knows innately that they will breed a strong baby with similar survival skills. So after she pops out a few babies from various strong but otherwise useless men, she turns to the guy with a good job, because he can provide for her and her offspring. It's a cycle. Look for it.

Age of consent, screw that. If they bleed, let me breed.

  • Age of consent on the internet is a joke. Theres no possible way to ever regulate it. I can remember being 10 and seeing "are you over 18?" and clicking yes. Any normal kid would do that. The reason websites ask that is so that they don't get into any legal trouble when kids ignore the disclaimer.

I do agree. Children do not need to be exposed to that stuff, but the 18+ warning won't restrict them.

  • I got to agree too many young people spend hours on
the Internet while mom and dad are working or they
are at friends houses I think that it's ridiculous
and yes it should be age 18 for one to be able to
get on the Internet or least have the permission
of a adult 18 or older to supervise them while online
like there are 13 year olds that shouldn't be on
websites but they are exposed to Adult related material

I voted for "remain 18" but you know.... it might be an idea to raise it to 21.

then you wouldn't have to worry about which rules are in what states.

Overall most people considered 18 an adult. So I think it should remain at 18 instead of say changing it to 15 or 16 since one single country says 16 is ok. However people also sometimes lie online so when is the other person liable? I mean if you are showing the picture to a 13 year old that lied and said they were 18 are you liable for child abuse?

I get what you're saying, but I have to point out a slight misconception. It's NOT illegal for a minor to look at pornography. It's illegal to give porn to a minor. But of course that's also how the age of consent works, so I suppose that makes your analogy better if anything.

Yeah gotta agree. I reckon there should be some age thing with the net- 18 or somem.
And I'm no saint believe me but whatever happens in life , at school and amongst kids friends is a natural progression - well usually .
But there's nothing natural about the internet and whats on the damn thing. Never in the history of the world would normal kids be able to see and read what they can now.

I wouldn't put it to age, per se, but more of a case of maturity. I know there's no way to judge that, but age itself doesn't really work well.

So how do you stop her having the internet , or her friends showing her porn they look at when she's over at their places.

I don't really care about age of consent - 15-18 , whatever , makes no difference to me when ever I lost my virginity , it's no big deal after afew yrs once your out there your out there.
But what I can't get use to is the internet and knowing that anyone of any age , 5 or 85, can be looking at porn so easily , reading through any club , about anything , or talking to anyone . This shit scares the shit out of me.
Even the idiot teachers are starting to insist they 10 yr olds carry fully connected notepads on them at schools now , and they teach them all about computers from how to set them up to finding stuff on the net. And if they know how to find stuff , then they can find anything . Hell 1/2 the car adds have someone fucking in an add at the top.
This shit blows me away and I wouldn't know where to begin with a kid.
