Afraid to sleep

I've been dealing with depression for several years. For the past several months, I've been having horrible nightmares. They occur anywhere from a couple times a week to only once every month or so, but they're so terrifying that even if it's been weeks since my last nightmare, I'm afraid to go to sleep. Is it normal to be so terrified of what you may see in your mind that you are scared to go to sleep?

Sorry to cut that short: therapy can help. Looking into it. That can at least take a look at your brain functions and see what's causing them.

These are called night terrors. Unfortunately, I haven't heard many successes in dealing with them, simply because it's brain activity that can't really change.
