A "what would you do?" story for you... warning: weirdness ahead...

I will try to keep this short and sweet, but if there's anything specific you would like to ask, feel free to, and I'll try to respond as best as I can.

I just feel like sharing my weird ass predicament with you all... So here goes:

(BTW, this IS, relatively, a true story...)

In the Spring of 2012 I met this woman, an architect, who seems to be as interested in farming/organics/permaculture as I am. She just happens to be in the process of buying a piece of land ten minutes from my house, and says she's going to build a sustainable farm there. So I'm like, SWEET, because that's one of my dreams is to learn how to sustainable farm, learn permaculture, and to homestead... and what better way to learn than in person, right?

So after the land was bought and the "manager" moved into the house (because she lives elsewhere) my primary function at that point was to chauffeur this man around because he doesn't drive. Now talking about this 50 year old man could take up an entire library of space so I'm going to simplify his description for you: EPIC. Let me elaborate: This bean pole of a man is a farmer, homesteader, he's traveled the country on foot, helped people around the country set up their own homesteads, and he's a downright asshole... but in a good way. He's just an awesome dude full of stories, passion for what he does, and common sense.

As far as the lady-land-owner goes, all I knew about her at this point was that she is in her late 40's possibly early 50's, and that's she seemed nice. Almost too nice, but I was clueless at this point.

Nothing much really changes until late summer and fall, when things start to get weird. I've skipped an entire episode of this story about another, younger man involved (let's call him Dave). This story would merit an entire post unto itself.

It became apparent to me that the Lady was refusing to listen to the Epic Man that she brought in to help her set up this farm. For one example, he always free ranged or had runs for his chickens. She insisted on chicken tractors. (She only has 3 chickens left now out of 8 or 9... I forget. Foxes broke into the stupid contraptions.)

Remember, she's an architect, not a farmer, and has never farmed in her entire life. She brings in an Epic Farmer, and refuses to listen to his advice and always does the opposite.

Remember again, I was brought into this mix with the hopes that I could be a part of something fantastic and beautiful. I had hoped that I could learn awesome things from this place.

And then THIS.

Biodynamics.

Now, before you go hating. I know a few things about biodynamics and what they do. I know about all nine of Steiner's preparations. I know about how they stuff organs of animals and skulls and spray silica and horn manure and all of that. I also know about the "ashing" of insects and mice, that involved cooking bugs or rodents down to ashes and stirring the remains into water and spraying it over a field. I know what Steiner preached. Biodynamics is a religious cult.

And not only that... but I know some things about the occult too. These practices, these preparations, are essentially magick rituals that use animal body parts to "harness etheric and astral forces". In "good" or "white" magick, the only time you ever spill blood is that of your own, and VERY rarely. This biodynamics stuff is more like "black" magick, and even worse! This stuff is damn near SATANIC!

And this woman claims to be Christian.

She's just recently brought this up (again, because it was brought up once in the spring, quickly shot down by everyone involved, and never brought up again until now). She seems to be insistent in bringing this evil crap to where I live!

Now, knowing what you know...

What the hell would YOU do!?!? Knowing this woman has crashed your hopes and dreams to learn the sustainable farming you have such a passion for? Knowing she promised great things, and wants to be involved with this religious evil cult?

Continue to participate. (why?) 1
Revenge! Tear her down! (legally of course) 7
Give her a good ripping and then walk away. 6

Revenge in any way possible! (legal or not) 8
Let it go and walk away. 21

I would realise that she doesn't owe me anything and that I was responsible for myself and would find somewhere more suitable to progress.

    • She kind of DOES though. All of the wasted gasoline to travel back and forth, all of the unpaid work hours, all of the broken promises...

I feel a deep SORROW now, because she promised so much and delivered nothing. That place is NOTHING like she said it would be. Check out my response to splashy.

        Welcome to LIFE....

Be smarter about who you get involved with, get things in writing, ca$h up front, clear responsibilities and rights, etc.

Here's a site that you might find useful:

        http://www.beginningfarmers.org/internship-and-employment-opportunities/

Scroll down past the first chunk of job listings, you will see a TON of other resources for internships, apprenticeships and links to more sites to find opportunities.

Also, farmaid.org is a GREAT resource. There's loans, grants, education and support programs searchable from this site based on your location and needs.

I have to agree with wigsplitz. I got ripped off massively when I first started work. I assumed people were going to do the right thing by me even if it went against their interests (i.e. like paying me a fair sum). It sounds horribly naive now.

If you want to take a positive from it, though, treat this as a useful lesson. You don't need to be hard with people, but you do need to cover your back, because nobody else will.

  • i would leave her be, she might not listen to the farmer with all the experience. she will learn by her mistakes he probly learnt from his own mistakes albeit when he was a lot younger. why are you so interested in her property?

    • I was so interested because she PROMISED so much. From the way she made it sound, it sounded like she was creating a freakin' paradise! She has 150+ acres of land, and tons of money, so she has all the resources to make it happen! (Whereas I only have 6+ acres, and little money.)

It's like this, she brought the farmer in, and told him: Do what you do, I need your help. And then when he TRIED, she refused to let him and insisted on something ass backwards!

He suggested free-range or run chickens, she insisted on chicken tractors. (Chickens are dead, Failed.)

He suggested fencing in a very large pasture with a pond for water, she insisted on mini pastures and hauling water. (Pain in the ass, failed.)

He suggested using the first year to do nothing but build infrastructure (fenced pastures, barns, coops, housing, etc, etc)... she insisted on buying animals (when this wasn't the plan) and then complains things are "half ass" when he only has three days and scrap lumber to build a coop.

He's trying to save her money (because she complains about spending money), yet she always seems to want to go the more expensive route, and she's always buying useless crap and storing it at the main house on the property.

He eventually decided he wanted one acre of her land to showcase what he really does for a living, she insists on shipping him off two hours away to another location next to an asshole (Bob) who got up in his grill when Bob was the one who stepped out of line... (This place was supposed to also be a place of learning... once it was set up, she wanted to start workshops or tours to teach people about permaculture or whatever we were doing. He thought it would be cool to have multiple types of farming, his and hers.)

I'm just SO PISSED because IF *I* had those resources there is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much that I could do with them! I would hire the Epic Farmer myself and transform the shit out of my own 6 acres, I'd buy land around here somewhere and transform it too!

All the broken promises twinkle like glass shards around my feet. All the promises. Broken. All of them.

      TT__TT

You actually believe in all this occult stuff?
It's a bloody farm. Simple as. End of. Why does magic have to be brought into it?

    Comment Hidden ( show )
      -
    • I don't really believe in it, no. What I'm saying is that they're going to be using ANIMAL BODY PARTS in what seems to be "magick rituals" to "gather life forces". That's damn near the definition of black magick! Regardless of whether I believe it or not... I will NOT misuse animals or their body parts! It's just... WRONG. :(

That is not sustainable farming. It is a waste of resources. Walk away.
Many people need to get involved in order to develop truly sustainable farming practices.
