A weird habit i used to have
I am a normal(ish!) woman but about 5 years ago, I went through a strange stage. I constantly craved ice. I loved chewing on ice cubes and always asked for extra ice in drinks. Here is the weird thing...I developed a habit of buying Spontex sponge household wipes. They are sold in UK supermarkets, usually as a pack of two, in pink, blue and yellow colours and they look a bit like slices of bread.
I would begin this strange ritual by washing the wipe in hot water to wash out any chemicals. Then I would soak it in cold water before putting it into the freezer.
A day later, I would open the freezer to take out the frozen wipe, then chew on it. It felt so normal and satisfying. I would bite off a frozen chunk, chew on it madly, then spit it out. I continued until the wipe was all chewed up.
I really didn't understand why I was doing this.
I had a routine blood test during that time and the result said that I had severe anaemia (due to bad menstrual periods) and was given iron supplements. When the iron levels finally became normal, the need to chew on iced Spontex wipes disappeared.
I have since read that severe anaemia causes 'pica'-a desire to eat non-food related items.
IIN?!
