A prostitute asked to walk with me. why?

Some time ago, I was coming home from collage at night and had to walk several blocks from the bus stop. A woman dressed in what I would describe as a slightly sexier version of office attire asked to walk with me, supposedly for safety. She indicated, without quite using the word, that she was a prostitute. After a few blocks we came to a payphone and she stopped to make a call, so I went on home.

I was left somewhat confused by the whole thing. She seemed like she really was nervous, but she didn't thank me or anything when we reached her destination. So what was that all about? Was she just worried, as many women would be, about walking alone at night? Was she afraid of being spotted by the police and thought another person would provide camouflage? (I didn't think she was that obvious.) Or was it all a routine to get me to hire her? Or, and this only occurred to me just now, could it have been a sting operation?

Maybe you looked trustworthy and she didn't want to be mugged. Could be that she had recently finished a job and had money on her, and it would be too risky if anyone targeted her.

    If she was a women dressed slutty and she walked to a pay phone shes Robby was calling for a ride. However if it was at night she was afraid someone might hurt her walking off the bus. She probably figured people are less likely to attack her if she is walking with a male or other people. Since they would be potential witnesses or someone who would get in a fight. I have heard of women not wanting to go out with out a boyfriend for fear they'll get attacked.

Maybe the area was a place that some other girls had been hurt and she was afraid that she was going to get hurt and REALLY needed some cover so she could get to the phone.

Are you sure that she was a woman? She might have been a transvestite. Either way, she might have been in danger and needed someone who looked like they could protect her. She needed someone who seemed good. Then, you came along and the rest is history. You were her night in shining armor. It is odd. Stuff like this probably doesn't happen everyday.

  Transvestite huh? Well since I didn't hire her I have no way of knowing what was between her legs. But as best I can recall (it was a while ago) she was petite and looks perfectly womanish.
  
  Anyway I'd certainly like to think I really helped her, but It was just so out of the ordinary for me that, like I said above, I don't know what to make of it.

    Transgender isn't "the preferred term" for transvestite, it means something completely different. Although it might be closer to what Avant-Garde meant... it's hard to say since that comment was so random.

      I know it's more of a cross dresser, but I also know what she meant. I was following her line of logic. I am sure she meant tranny, transexual, transgender because they are more likely to be prostitutes. Either way had nothing to do with the story.

    Being a "Transvestite" is completely different from being "Transgendered". I mentioned it, because she could have been the target of homophobic hate. If this were the case, it would make even more sense for her to be desperate enough to find someone willing to protect her, even if that someone happened to be a complete stranger.

I noticed a bunch more people voted "trying to sell" since the first batch of answers. That's a reasonable explanation, obviously, but I'm curious why you picked it. Has it happened to anyone else here? Is it a "standard come-on"? I admit being somewhat naive in this area.

She is the only person who knows. Asking virtual strangers is no different than describing a movie you just saw and then asking people what they thought of the movie you just saw and described. You'll get about the same level of accuracy in the response.

  She might be on this site, who knows! More seriously, there could be some other prostitutes, or johns, cops, or anyone who knows more about the business than I do on here. So they might have some insights. I guess more than anything I just wondered if it was a common occurrence--from the answers I got, I'm assuming not.
  
  Besides, I thought it was a mildly interesting anecdote. Obviously it's not something I really NEED an answer to.
