I think it's likely they were stolen if he seemed anxious to get rid of them, or at least out of his possession temporarily (by telling you to "borrow" them).

But, as far as poor people owning expensive items goes, you would be surprised how common this is. The thing is, some people's priorities are mixed up and they value the latest and trendiest gadgets over the important stuff like rent, gas, food, etc. They like to live above their means. I know several people like this, and they wonder why they are struggling while they are constantly blowing money they don't have and racking up thousands of dollars of credit card debt on things they can't afford and don't need, while neglecting responsibilities like bills, gas, putting food on the table, etc. Usually, like you mentioned, they find an enabler to mooch off of.

I dug some electronics and a knife from the trash once. The knife was covered in trash and ketchup (it was ketchup) it was navy branded so it saved me 35$ to use the trash one.
