A great night-out conversational starter

Hello all,

Everytime I go out, I itch to talk to others but I get too shy to even utter a word. I don't know how I should approach them. Many of you may think it's because I'm a female approaching men but truly, my shyness reigns on with both sexes. I assume I'd be Really boring and keep thinking "What if I mess up?!". That ends up preventing me from being friendly. Is this normal?

Please do share some good conversational starters for a night out. Something engaging and perhaps pleasantly surprising.

Let me just say something... The most interesting conversations I've ever had started with some very random, awkward, unpretentious shit. I don't find it easy to start talking to people if all I've got is the weather. Making it personal, specifically related to the ones you're talking to, is way more effective. (Although just plain spontaneous is much better) Try not to resort to the clichés, they're boring; I mean, if you want to attract interesting creative people, you have to do it differently. Ah, damn! I think I'm just really talking of my own preferences and realized that maybe I can't help you?

Simple is best. You don't need to say something that sounds rehearsed and contrived. "Hi, what's your name?" works well. "I like/hate this song" and "what are you drinking?" are fairly standard ones you can use later in conversations too.

People on nights out are looking for a good time. They see things through rose-tinted glasses. They're looking for reasons to like you. Most people don't find shyness boring, because shyness is something different to what they usually get to see. They find it intriguing.

A lot of guys find shy girls cute (and vice versa), so don't hide your awkwardness with fake confidence and contrived one-liners. Being yourself shows real confidence, which is attractive, and your "real self" is always a lot more interesting and likable than being fake.

"You have nice eyes! Can I touch em??"

There's some better advice up the top.

"What if I mess up?!" Yes exactly. Do you imagine they will pull out a firearm and shoot you dead? Or perhaps they will get up on the bar and point their finger down at you, yelling so everybody can hear, "She messed up, she messed up!". Maybe everyone within earshot will run from the room in horror, because you messed up.
Or, more than likely you will be accepted into their circle and you can slowly make some new friends. Just remember this quote, though; "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

Try walking up and asking them how they like to start a polite conversation with strangers.

Or if it's a guy, tell him you can suck a golf ball thru 10 feet of garden hose.
