"you'll never get through life being nice"...is that true?

I remember letting this couple go before me and my mom at a Walmart register while she left to go put some item back. When she came back, she asked me why I gave up our place in the line. I told her "because I felt like it and I was trying to be nice". The women ahead of us turned around and said dryly, "you'll never get through life being nice" and that was pretty much it. Honestly, I'm hardly ever generous in public and the one time I was I was kinda put down for it. Was I really though? Plus do you agree or disagree with her statement and explain why or why not.

To keep it short: You'll find the right people in life by being nice.

Think of it as a filtering out all the crap and keeping the clean water.

Sounds like something only a bitter person would say, or someone who doesn't realise that being nice when you can doesn't mean you can't stand up for yourself when you need to.

That said, never let someone push in in a queue. It doesn't just push you back - it pushes back *everyone* behind you just as much. It isn't fair to make that decision on behalf of all the people behind you. It should be a group decision made by everyone in the queue, and since it's impossible to ask everyone for permission you have to be firm and tell them you can't. You might think it's generous, but I think it's really rude.

I do believe that sometime you have to put your foot down and not let people walk all over you, but I think it's good to be a nice person and help others. Personally, I don't think being an asshole all the time is going to get you anywhere either. There was nothing wrong with what you did. What you did was good :)

Disagree 100%. I'm a first year Nursing student and I've learned quickly that being nice to your patients, their families and caring about them is how they recover quickly and how to form a trusting relationship. And I believe that this applies to all facets of life.

Even if you feel like shit you should still be nice to people; the way I see it, I feel down in the dumps and depressed a lot of the time and I don't want other people to feel the same, so I'm nice and bring them up in their mood.

I think you can be too nice in this world today. Even though I've heard that saying before I still try to be a nice person, I can be nasty if someone is yano getting on my tits. But whatever if they don't like me being nice then that's their problem. I am meeee! And I like to be nice to others.

If she had smiled when she said it she'd probably have been grateful... She just sounds like an old cynic to me.

Ugh! I've been through that too many times! But, if you're nice, you live a positive life. And if you have the right values, you're successful in life. If you put them together, BAM! You get the best life ever! And you're still nice!

people develop cynicism over time and those who have been hurt in the past will say such things.
I think the danger in being nice is that it makes you a target for some to take advantage of. I do think it is possible to be nice, kind and considerate towards people while still being discerning. Therefore you can be nice if you also practice your smarts and intuition.
I like to be a positive force in the world. There's enough assholes. I love the feeling of making someone's day.

its the same as saying, nice guys finish last. Im a nice guy, and i always just am even when i have a chance not to be. Unlike the fable, the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady doesn't ever win the race. But thats just my opinion based on my very own observation and experience.

What sucks is that my "integrity" wont allow me to be a douchebag, so im stuck like this.

In life one can be oh so clever, or oh so nice. It is so much easier to be nice.
I wish I was a nicer person, but after half a century of being treated poorly by oh so many people, it is quite difficult.

Sometimes people say all sorts of wacky things when they are in a bad mood. Don't read too much into advice from strangers.
