..to often detect a needy/controlling tone of voice

Is is normal to often detect a sort of conditionality in a persons demeanor/tone of voice? In other words, as if the person requires a specific response from you. For example, someone might ask, "are you ready?" with a very discreet tone that almost warns of potential consequences if not answered correctly.

Am I over analyzing people, or am I just afraid of being controlled?

It's normal. It might indicate that you don't trust people easily, but there's nothing wrong with that. Some people are more able to detect truth behind words than others. I consider it a really useful advantage.

This is normal. A lot of people use tone of voice as a subtle form of manipulation or sub-communication. You can play games with this, in order to avoid being manipulated. For example, to "are you ready?" you can just reply with a confident "Nope! I need another 15 minutes."
