"the big red button" syndrome, is it normal?

ok so i have self-diagnosed myself with a made up syndrome to make myself feel a little bit less crazy. i call it "the big red button sydrome" where if you're told "DO NOT! press this big red button or you WILL die!" and what do what you want to do more than anything in the world? that's right, press it.

basically my problem is that in some situations i get an extreme compulsion to do the absolutely wrong thing. for example, when i stand on a bridge and look over the edge, i get a very strong compulsion to jump to my death. However, i most certainly am not suicidal in any other situation. i love my life and dont want to die.

also, another situation this occurs is when i'm in a very solemn or quiet event, i get an extreme compulsion to scream something very inappropiate. i've been told briefly that this is called latent tourettes. apparently this is how full-blown tourettes begins but im not sure how creditable that information is.

anyway, is this normal?

I have the same exact thing happening to me.

Yesterday I was watching my mother cook and it was really quiet (my house is never quiet) so it felt awkward, the next second, I'm screaming "YOU'RE GOING TO BURN THE FUCKING HOUSE DOWN, YOU CAN'T COOK FOR SHIT!" (My mom's a professional chef.)

My mother actually made me go to the doctor for it because it got so out of control, I would be in Wal-Mart and shout random things to people.

They didn't have a specific name for it, they just said that people like me needed a big rush to keep them calm.

I tried bungee jumping and it actually helped for about a week.

Just get a big thrill, like a roller coaster, sky diving, or bungee jumping.

It helped me and hopefully it'll help for you! :)

I have the same. fuck that tourettes shit REALLY. I sit in the classroom like...everything is quiet..people are in that mode of listening too the teacher and contributing(im from norway so i write words wrong)..and I get this kick, like an adrenalinerush thinking about what they would say or do, and think about me if i just screams BANANALAMP or FISH GONE WILD IN YOUR SOCK..but its mostly because i am SO bored. sometimes i just want to SLAP people in the middle of a serious conversation. Its fun when people dont understand a SHIT about what you are doing and why, though you know it would make you "the crazy girl" you could try doing more "fun wrong things" with your friends at night like laying a salmond at a persons door, ring the bell and run..might have a note to that says "Hi, this is ben, he needs a babysitter because of an emergensy, love, your neighbor" HAHA. ok not? yeye.

TOTALLY normal, unfortunately. As long as you never act on these impulses.. I used to stare at the passenger-side door while riding on the freeway when I was young and would ponder about the idea of knowing that I could open the door at any moment, while moving over 70mph, and end it all right now.. It terrified me so much that it wasn't the depressing thought that intrigued me but it was knowing that if there is an after-life, I could know "the answer" right now if I wanted! Again, I never wanted to DIE or was uber-depressed or anything.. but it was the fact that I could have the unanswerable question revealed to me RIGHT NOW if I did want to find out!

Fortunately, growing up has shown me that if there is anything such as a "past-life", then this life would HAVE to be worth fighting for in the "next" life (a.k.a. this life, right now)because the idea of hurting my family by suddenly disappearing would surely be my idea of hell more so then any physical pain I could imagine while rolling out the side door and crushing every bone in my body to pieces.

(was the last line one too much?)LOL.

So many people do that. It's normal. I so badly had the urge to jump into the Grand Canyon. Cannonball!!!!!

LOL.. i don't think anything is wrong with you. and 'latent' tourettes sounds completely bogus. i don't think that even exists.

Sometimes I envision myself driving off a bridge or into other vehicles. It's a weird urge, isn't it...

  • OMG. i feel the exact same way!!!

but its weird cause im kinda like a "goody-goody" girl but i always secretly feel like doing something completely inappropriate or dangerous..
well, like with the bridge thing. i am kind of scared of heights, its because i always have the urge to jump off a cliff/bridge/building

I have Asperger Syndrome and honestly I don't think u have that. Not because you're not like me, but I read many many books about it and it doesn't look like AS.

Alright I personally think your, "Don't Press the Red Button" is probably more likely an ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder) which is what I have. I would have no means of going over a bridge because I'm scared of heights but that's just me. So I'm very sure you must have ADHD.

forgive me but isnt ADHD where you cant concentrate for an extended period of time? im guessing its probably much more complex than that but thats my understanding of it. thanks for your input though:]

Ok dude. What you have aint normal but i know a friend that has this. What u gotta do is think of sumthng else when u get to tht situation. Like a unicorn or sumthng. Many kids are told not to steel candy. They do it.
