is it normal that wear a red wedding dress?

My friend is getting married and wants to wear a red wedding dress. Since I had a Christmas wedding, I had also had a red wedding dress. But her plan was to get married in March. I think it's great either way, but I was just wondering if it there was a rule as to what colors to wear for what season or if those rules even matter anymore?

  • To be honest, the white wedding dress has lost its meaning, and has no place in modern weddings. It is supposed to symbolize purity (virginity), and the majority of those wearing it are anything but "pure" (in the sense of virginity).

Eh, the whole glorifying virginity thing is kind of fucked up anyway, so I don't mind.

      Hahaha, I know, right?

Although I take no issue to a non-virgin bride wearing the white dress, nowadays it's just a fackin dress, no real reason to care that much about what the color means.

      • I'm not against it either to be honest. I think less of the symbolism of weddings due to it, though.

Nothing wrong with colored wedding dresses, mine(assuming I ever get married) is going to be black and white.

Not exactly orthodox, but then again weddings are getting more and more creative as society progresses.

I think wearing anything but a white wedding dress would feel to much like prom. lol

In many Asian countries, the red wedding dress is the norm. I think we have a problem in the west with red being associated with wickedness or danger.

I Googled images of traditional western wedding dresses in red, because I was struggling to imagine it. They looked absolutely fantastic. If my bride was wearing this:

...my eyes would pop out on stalks!

That dress is probably exhausting to wear, though. Satin with a full skirt and all those pick ups weighs a lot.

Spoilsport! It's worth it for a day. :P

When is your special day, by the way? It can't be much more than a week away now.

It's actually about a month away, on October 12. I'm so nervous!

Also, IIN cut off the rest of my post for some reason. I said that I really love the satin pick ups on that dress (heavy or not), and that the dropped waist is really lovely and flattering. I tried on some dresses with a similar structure and material, which is how I know it's heavy. I could barely stand in one. I'm a huge sucker for ball gowns. I'm a little concerned about the fact that the beading goes under the armpit, though, as that can be itchy or painful if the beads aren't smooth. If you look here, those little crystal beads look sharp as hell: http://vivifypicture.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Deep-Red-Wedding-Dresses-Picture-3.jpg There are ways to fix that, though, like adding lace over that section.

I'll be wearing this dress: http://www.morileewedding.com/voyage-6508-mori-lee-wedding-dress/

I won't be wearing the belt, though, as it needlessly breaks up the body. I think the intent is to bring attention to the smallest part of the waist, but it ends up shortening the torso.

If I'd gotten a red dress, I think I would have gone with something with black accents, maybe some black lace, if I could find one, because I think that would feel less prom-ish. A dark red with ivory accents would work, too, but I wouldn't want bright white or diamond white accents. I can't picture how that could turn out any way other than awful.

Dammit, dappled, now I'm looking at dresses again. YOU DID THIS, DAPPLED. THIS IS YOUR FAULT.

I don't know what would be better; wearing that dress and being the centre of the universe for a day, or standing at the altar, turning round and noticing a woman dressed like that walking towards you, and knowing you're going to be married to her.

This is really bringing out my girlie side. I'm almost squeaking with delight here. :D

  • A red dress, that's great. :)

I know a bride who wore a bronze coloured one to a June wedding. All of the other weddings I've been to, the dress worn was white.
