I know you probably don't want to rat out your friend but I would strongly recommend letting an adult know of this situation and get him the help that he so strongly needs before it gets out of hand. Just a word of caution on your part; he may be killing small animals now, but what if he decides to kill something a little larger like yourself... people never think it'll happen to them, until it's too late.

You need to let his parent's know as soon as possible so they can get him some mental help. As other people said, yes, killers almost always start with torturing small animals then make their way up to people. Get him some help before it's to late, because those are warning sings of sociopathy and psychopathy. Hope all goes well.

Many moons ago, I had this friend who had allot of "issues" and on a few occasions he told me that he hurt his cats. I was so young back then and I didn't know that this was a serious issue. I was weirded out, but I didn't want to think anything bad of my friend. I got to the point if he would bring it up that I would automatically try to change the subject. Anyway, quite some years later our friendship permanently crumbled... I don't know if he managed to get his "issues" resolved or not, but if I could've gone back in time I would've tried to alert someone to the situation...

I doubt this is a phase. I think he could use psychological help. His behavior is criminal, he could be locked up for animal cruelty.
If he tortured and killed animals because it was interesting to him, then I'd say he may be a sociopath. He lacks empathy. Some syndromes like Aspergers syndrome affect emotional development without affecting cognitive development. He could be very intelligent, but lack the ability to feel or recognize the suffering of others. BTW, a common symptom associated with Aspergers syndrome is clumsiness.

If he's harming animals because he enjoys it, then I'd guess he's emotionally disturbed. He might be lashing out because he's suffering emotionally or psychologically himself.

Either way, I think it's best for him, and the neighborhood fauna if he had it looked into by a professional.
