"is it normal that my boyfriend cracks while he exercises?"

For his extremely late New Years resolution, my boyfriend Brian decided to start exercising. He got this P90X DVD set and started going into "X" version instead of taking it slow.

Anyway, he's about a week and a half into it and I would pass the room a few times and hear cracking, you know, like when you crack your knuckles or pop your back when you stretch. I asked him about and he would just say something along the lines or his age and needed an oil change as a joke.

I know he was spouting BS when he said that because he's only 18 years old. Why would he have a problem with his joints at that age? So I pushed it aside just this once and let him continue.

Right now, he's been doing for three weeks and I hoped he got into the swing of things and stopped making those noises. Unfortunately, his arms still pop when he lifts the weights or does push-ups.

It's been three whole weeks and I'm getting worried. I thought his body would be used to the program but those popping sounds aren't very convincing. Am I paranoid? Are these cracking and popping sounds normal? Or should I call both of his Dad to make him stop and rethink his exercise methods?

Cracking joints isn't actually bad. That's an old wives tale. It had nothing to do with the cartilage.

I have the same thing happen whenever I take a break from working out then go back to it.

I have a thing called snapping hip. It happens to my left leg and when I open it up wide you can hear multiple loud cracks. What's weird is that it doesn't hurt at all. My left foot also cracks loudly when I roll it. But it feels good. I guess it's okay as long as its not hurting him.

  • He's normal, but just not common.

My joints have being doing that for 25 years and I'm healthy, fit and flexible. It's fine. If he goes to a doctor, the doctor will tell him it's normal. I've asked about five different doctors myself.

I heard P90X is really unhealthy. Losing weight that fast isn't good for your body.

Cracking joints is also quite unhealthy. Tell him to get that shit checked out.
Yes, I read all of it, but P90X pooped into my head and I remembered a friend saying something about it. So that overrided my reply to the joints.

Cracking joints doesn't cause arthritis if that's what you're going at. The "cracking" noise is cause when the fluid in your joints is pulled apart, forming gas bubbles. The gas bubbles popping is the noise you hear.

          • So is this going to be temporary or am I just going to have to get used to it? I mean, even if he finally get used to the program, will it stop?

It may last for a couple months max. It's different with everyone. Good stretching also helps get rid of it quicker.
