"good luck to you all"...? is it a normal phrase?

Whenever I hear "good luck to everyone" or "good luck to you all" or some such thing, in say, a competition/game show, it baffles me a little bit. Surely if you're giving everyone the same amount of good luck, then that defeats the whole point of giving them luck, no?

Is it normal to think this? Or have I just misunderstood the phrase entirely?

  • It's only a polite phrase and they have to say it to everyone because saying it to only one competitor would be rude as fuck.

It is essentially saying "I wish each of you success." It's just a nice thing to say and shows a lack of favouritism, even if ultimately not everyone will succeed.

Also if you give everyone equal luck, then it's only through their individual efforts that they'll succeed and not because of pure chance. May the best 'man' win.

Perhaps you could consider the phrase more along the lines of "I hope none of you get injured", but with a more positive "uplifting" spin?

yeah its a good wish.. its to encourage all of the ones participating and obviously giving good wishes to any one would be awkward.. and for them before the winner every one's equal if they can wish you why not others..

Well its not like they know who is going to win. They can not pick one person to tell good luck either. Its just a gesture of good faith. Like saying "Happy holidays" or "I wish you well".
