I don't really get the "gee what a surprise" response, as if everyone who does drugs and has multiple sexual partners is bound to get HIV...

HIV is transferred by blood or Sexually transmitted. Some drugs like heroin make you very at risk of getting it as well. Charlie was as much of a train wreck on and off screen. He would do drugs and sleep around and was just a giant mess. If you dont check who you sleep with, will sleep with anyone, ready to drink yourself into a coma each night, and are either drunk or high 90 percent of the time do you really expect to stay CLEAN forever? You just drastically increased your risk. So its statistics.
