50 years ago everything was built better

I can't stand the quality of anything nowadays. Old everything lasts forever that's why "antiques" are so in demand. People like old cars, old clothes, old TVs, old phones, old stoves, old houses... All that stuff is in demand. Back then people didn't say they wanted things that were made 50 years before then. Why? Because what they had worked. People took pride in what they made and they made it well. A house made back then was made to last. A house today will need something major replaced within a year.

It's called planned obsolescence buddy. Placing a lifetime upon goods so that they become obsolete, hence forcing the consumers to buy the next brand/model.

I notice you completely ignored my comment about asbestos. As someone who's been personally exposed to that shit, I don't really want that around. And if it gets disturbed you need professionals to remove it safely, technically

And also that's a very narrow view of things. In the 50s and before that thing for me to last yes

But they're also not made to run efficiently, or economically be that viable because of how expensive they are.

Although I think it's a shame we live in such a throwaway economy. I don't think you quite grasp that how cheap vs the old days.

You don't really see a lot of repairman for appliances anymore, because it's actually more expensive now to repair something that it isn't just buy a new one

If we could just get people to recycle shit better it would at least help with all of the extra waste we generate in this model

I think the main problem with the quality of things we buy now, is more who is making it.

Because most manufacturing jobs are no longer in the US.

And sadly they will never really return to the way they were.

China's ability to manipulate it's currency value to make it more profitable in the macro for the US

means that manufacturing in the United States can't compete on the same level.

But on the flipside of that argument, everything is much more afordable now for the average buyer.

Really what needs to happen is finding a delicate happy balance point between the two. Affordability and quality.

It's because it's quicker to make crap and sell it super expensive.

What I liked is if something broke, they fixed it. Now we just throw it away and buy a new one.
