17, never had a job, can't drive

I am 17 and i feel like nothing is going right in my life. I love my parents to death and they have given me almost everything that I want. I am going to be a senior this upcoming year and I hear all of my friends talking about their summer jobs and how they are building expirence. I do not have the oppertunity to do this and it worries me. I can not get a job in the summer because my parents both have jobs and I am stuck at home watching my little brothers. I have had odd jobs in the past but I have never been paid for them. The main reason being because they were for family. I don't know what to do. I am a straight A student and I can't get my permit like most other kids who have them. Even though my parents say that I am so much better then other kids at my school, I feel as if I am trapped and will suffer in college. Please take the time to read this and respond. Thanks for your help in advance.

Most kids in college are mama's boys and princesses, so you won't be unpopular. I assume you will be a social butterfly. Your grades will be Bs and Cs though. Sorry to predict your future, but that's what I do for a living - read fortunes.

It's OK to have a 2.0 in college though, if you go directly to work on Wall Street or something like that. The biggest thing to remember in job interviews is to look good. You can be a moron, but if you look good, you'll get hired. I have a 3.92 GPA and a Masters degree and make about the same wage as a Mexican gardener. Life is funny that way.

Tell them it's important to you to work a job not baby sit. Even if you ride a bike. You can make some money and show them you can handle responsibility.

I'm 21 and still don't have my license... my mom's old car died when I was about 15 and she couldn't afford to get another one so I didn't get to learn. When I was 20 I got my permit and my mom said she would get a car but she never did. So now my permit is expired and I didn't get that much practice until recently when I got with a girl with her own car. So here I am at 21 with an expired permit... I have to go to the DMV to get it renewed. Havn't even taken the driving test yet. My girl had her license since she was 17.

it sounds like you are suffering because your parents had too large of a brood for them to handle. now you're stuck taking care of their brats instead of gaining life experience. you'd better hit the ground running when you go to college, that means JOB, LICENSE and EXPERIENCE or you'll end up broke, working a shitty job and having a buttload of kids like your parents.

Use your connections to get a job. My parents and brother worked at the same place, and I know the bosses son, and I recently mustered up the courage to ask him if I could work in the fall due to the leaving college students. I got my first job after asking him. After raising money via job, you can schedule permit lessons. I'm still working on the permit part. Good luck.

You shouldn't worry much.. once you actually start being able to do your own things and look for a job and learn how to drive, you'll appreciate it that much more. Plus, you won't turn out as stuck up as a lot of your classmates will because you aren't being spoiled. When it comes to looking for a job in the future, you can write down your work for the family on your resume just as a base and have your family members be references. Otherwise, whenever you are allowed or when you go off to college, find a job to start off with that doesn't require a lot of past experience like an on-campus job or a small ice cream shop or something.

You are normal to worry about this and should speak to your parents about this. The ability to drive a vehicle is important especially if you're going away to college soon. Be honest and mature in your approach(which you sound very level-headed already). I wish you all the luck in the world!

    ~Peace~
