Would it be possible for someone to just “poof” or “vanish” out of thin air

Could that even happen??? Where would you go or end up if you just disappeared out of nowhere into the air?? That would scare the life out of me.

Well from my understanding from what I've read, it is technically possible for someone to spontaneously teleport from one place to another, due to how quantum mechanics works. Subatomic particles don't really have a definite position, but rather a probability of being in one position or another around a certain point. They have a much higher probability of being very close to that point, but there is a (very small) chance of them being much further away from that point too. And their position can instantly change from being in one position around that point, to another position around it. So then they basically teleport from one place to another around that point. (But because there are trillions of atoms in even the smallest visible objects, this has no real effect on that object because the positions of the subatomic particles will average out to an essentially definite postion).

So it is possible that all the subatomic particles that make up a person could spontaneously teleport to somewhere else, into the exact same configuration that makes up the shape of the person. According to the physicist Michio Kaku however, that would be so insanely unlikely that you would have to wait longer than the lifetime of the universe for it to happen.

This method of teleporting was used in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' however. They could (somehow) alter the probability of quantum events so that incredibly unlikely events became incredibly likely events, so that the odds of them teleporting to where they wanted to go would almost definitely happen.

I read all this in Michio Kaku's book 'Physics of the Impossible'.

PS. I'm no expert on this though, so if someone saw that I made a mistake on this then please do correct me.

      Or a sinkhole.

  • Oh, there's plenty of people I'd wish would just "poof" out my life. A man can dream...

I don't think it's possible to just go poor out of thin air. Does spontaneous combustion count?

Also there are those kooks who believe in bigfoot, and believe that bigfoot is an interdimensional being... meh.

Isn't spontaneous human combustion a big load of shit, too?

Yeah, it's been scientifically debunked. The explanation is called the wick effect. I guess adipose tissue makes people into slow burning candles. Gross but interesting. That myth scared me as a kiddo.
