Working in retail made me a better shoplifter

When I was about 16, I got a job in a supermarket and when I started the manager told me all the kinds of things shoplifters do that I should look out for.

For example, they told me to always check the bottom of the carts as customers come through because sometimes they leave expensive but thin items in the bottom to steal them. So now I always make sure I go to a cashier who isn’t checking the bottom of the carts for stolen items.

Now that I know what the staff are looking out for, it is easier for me to steal stuff. Is it normal that they basically just gave me a tutorial in shoplifting?

Is It Normal?

  • Learn the basic skill of paying for stuff with money like a proper human being, you self-centered garbage sack of shit.

  • Not normal as they probably have cameras and could get used against you.

    • In the UK, most stores won’t prosecute if what you steal has a value of less than £50 plus security cameras aren’t actively monitored so they wouldn’t check unless they suspected I was stealing, which they never do.

      • Same in the US. We also have a “no chase” policy in most grocery stores for employees safety.

      • I was thinking of you as I read the post, haha

I'm the same, every job I've had has taught me how to use their system to my advantage

  • I'm just trying to think of an item that is expensive but thin...

  • I learned so much about shoplifting when I worked in a posh department store a few years ago, how to remove security tags from items and where to hide them in the fitting rooms and specifically for that building where the camera blind spots were. Those were the tactics of the ones who didn’t get caught. The ones who did tried to steal in plain sight on the shop floor, came in dressed in cheap trashy clothes that flagged them as suspicious or got greedy and tried to take too much (the record was 8 large bags, she was arrested).

Personally I didn’t steal anything but I know a lot of the staff, and likely former staff, did so you’re not alone in picking this up.

  • I used to shoplift magazines as a kid (the kind you read, not gun ammo). I was pretty good too, had the ol under the shirt routine down to a tee. Eventually I got caught though. The lady in the 7 Eleven stopped me and gave me a lecture before letting me go. Never did that shit again.

  • I really hate thieves!

  • Money wont have any value soon and the items you’re stealing wont either.

  • I personally don’t give a fuck about stealing from chains. Literally everything you purchase anywhere as an up charge added to it bc of theft. So, I don’t see anything wrong in evening that out every once in a while.
