Wisdom tooth removal questions

I'm getting wisdom tooth surgery on Tuesday afternoon. I'm getting nervous, but that's besides the point.

For those who have had their wisdom teeth surgically removed, were you given anesthesia for the procedure or were you left awake?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Military only put you out if you were REALLY not cool with dental stuff. Being numbed wasnt bad, and while i was conscious i think they drugged me a bit extra because 3 days kinda passed by in a flash. That or 3 days of required bed rest was awesome in the first few weeks of bootcamp.

    • I can't tell if you are serious, or joking.

      • I honestly dont know. I remember shuffling back to my barracks (after getting my bottom wisdom teeth cracked out of my head) on monday and suddenly it was thursday and I was on light duty (cant exercise but can do bookwork) and I do remember that it was bookmarked as the best god damn week in bootcamp.

Then again they did give me pain meds through an IV so I dont know what kind of weird anesthetics they pumped into me. I do remember tasting within my tounge nickels, just through my own bloodflow. Tasting like that is super weird.

  • I actually just had all 4 of mine pulled out a month ago, I was put under for it. Got gas then anesthesia

My wife is an oral surgeon and she says those who choose not to be put under usually regret it
But if you get sick from anesthesia (very common) you want to tell your surgeon beforehand and they will give you either a patch that goes on your skin or tablets that dissolve under your tongue to beat the nausea

Don’t accept any pain medication that isn’t over the counter. 800 mg Ibuprofen is enough. They should give you a rinse, use it to prevent dry socket

    • I'm 1 week removed from my surgery. (It was delayed substantially after making this post.) I actually didn't even need ibuprofen. Just the rinse, a bit of gauze, and antibiotics.

The prescribed hydrocodone but I haven't used any of it. Pain has been minimal. People had me worried for nothing.

    • They gave me prescription painkillers, and I didn't have any problems at all whatsoever! I would have been much less comfortable with only over the counter NSAID pain relievers.

      • Opioids and prescription painkillers make me nervous, I wouldn’t recommend them to anyone out of caution because of how many people have trouble managing them

  • I voted neither of them because I never had my wisdom teeth removed, I was diagnosed with gingivitis and told to floss, I cut my wisdom tooth at 21 years old.

  • Hi Ive had both. For impacted I was put under, for erupted i took xanax and laughing gas( I recommend!)
I may be lucky but I had zero pain with the awake one, my dentist made sure I was comfortable, completely numb and my tooth came out in like 3 minutes.
Recovery wasnt bad either. The recovery from impacted was slightly worse.
I hope it goes well for you.
