Sounds like such a weird thing to even debate right now. Puerto Rico should become a state before DC
From interviews I've seen of people on the street, they're mad about their high taxes and no representation. You can bet though that somehow it benefits the ultra wealthy. That's the only reason the government does anything.
Because I live in Scotland. I wonder why is the United States still divided up into 50 states? there are still borders between States but yet the United States has meant to be one unified country?????
It's a very old debate.... essentially no representation.
The initial concept of DC was that there would be a place where the federal government resided that was independent of any state... and they should have insisted that there were no permanent residents to make that work properly.
Now you have a lot of permanent residents that can legitimately claim that they do not have proper representation and that they do not get to appropriately chose their own rules and laws which normally fall under "States Rights."
pretty sure it had something to do with votes counting or not counting
for example, united states policies affect DC but if they can't vote or if their votes don't count in the same way, then they can't have a say in how they're affected
