Why do some people joke about themselves like they are trash or garbage?

My neighbor's wifi name is 'late night trash', probably alluding to a joke about themselves.
They host a lot of parties, drink, have bonfires, talk sports or whatever.

But why is that funny? To think of oneself as garbage or trash?

I just don't get it. Maybe they know they're trash and joking about it.

But joking about it isn't something I'd ever do. Anymore than joking about being 'dead inside' or whatever. It's not funny. It's actually quite sad.

Imagine you're a 5 or 6 year old and hear someone saying that. They'd probably think the same thing. And children are closest to their spiritual and human side than any grown ass adult.

It's sad to see people do these things, not just frustrating or confusing.

My Wi-Fi's name is Dr Evil's Lair, mostly because I am obsessed with Dr. Evil.

    Self deprecating humour, normal.

There’s a point where it is, and a point where it gets unhealthy and unattractive to use that type of humor.

In this case, I just don’t get it. Being dead inside, or feeling like a lower class person or citizen or nobody or cast aside, isn’t something funny.

Now if your making fun of the giant mole on your face, or that you look uncanningly like Denzel Washington, that’s a different story

        I would argue the opposite.

In that not giving a shit about the useless concept of “class” and trying to be “somebody” is extremely healthy. Pursuing worthless accolades to prop up self esteem is weakness. If they don’t have the status suddenly, it causes so much distress. It all seems pathetic to those who never put stock in any of it.

Because their wifi name is "late night trash" doesn't mean they think they are trash. That is stupid that you automatically assume that. Didn't you say they host a lot of parties? Maybe that's their wifi name because they have pick up trash people leave around at parties. People tend to do that when they go to parties.

      It’s stupid?
On a site called ‘is it normal’ which is host to a bunch of subversive types of people and similar questions and you think people are just so simple and obvious and lacking depth. I think you’re the complacent one.

So? because this is where you ask if something is normal, I can't point out when an OP says or asks something stupid? Gotcha. And it wasn't the question that I was saying is stupid, dumbass. I said her assumption is stupid. Pay attention next time, stupidfuck.

I am the OP buddy, I’m not a her,
and the assumption is not stupid. End of story.

The assumption is part of the question, so what difference does it make? Now I’m the stupid one?

I’d like you to call a total stranger in public stupid next time, see what their response is.

I'm not going to just call someone stupid for no reason. If I were to go and call a stranger stupid, that would be stupid itself. Anyways, What time does your neighbor host parties?

Maybe the "trash" is in reference to the material they are viewing.

People like that are usually fishing for compliments. If everyone just stopped giving a fuck about them they would shut up too

On the one hand, being able to recognise, accept and laugh about your human failings is a sign of emotional maturity and a secure self-image (assuming those failings don't include things like an insatiable desire to slaughter other people, of course).

On the other hand, constant self-denigration - finding fault in everything you do, and never being able to meet impossible standards of perfection - is a profoundly damaging thing.

But I suspect that what's going on with your neighbours is something different. I wonder if one of your other neighbours has complained about their late-night antics and used that term in a confrontation. So they chose that WiFi network name as a sort of sticks-and-stones fuck you.

And there are people who take a perverse pride in behaving in ways that the majority of people consider trashy. They do whatever the hell they want, they don't give a damn about what others think about them, and they often don't give a shit about what impact their actions have on others. So the network name could be a stupid little fuck you to the whole world.

Interesting - yes I’m just assuming it’s the neighbors next door to me who happen to throw parties, that would be a bit nasty and passive aggressive if it was another neighbor renaming their wifi network to subtlety hint at their disapproval; or maybe they already complained and my neighbors were like FU and just owning their nature so to speak

It's humor from people close to my age. Usually it's from attention seeking individuals.

It's also good social media bait.

I’m 25 and notice some of my friends doing this. I really don’t understand the appeal of calling yourself trash either, I get enough rude comments without insulting myself. I suspect it stems from low self esteem.

I’ve noticed it a lot on self-degrading memes and it’s not funny or attractive at all

True, some people talk about themselves being very damaged and almost virtue signal that they have trauma. Its good to be self aware to an extent but harping on it just makes u more depressed.
