Who's birth year had the better music? me or my mom's?

Me and my mom recently fell into a weird discussion over whether her birth year, or my birth year, had the best music. She was born in 1976, and I was born in 1999. To be completely honest, I feel like I'm at a major disadvantage here.

1997-2010 is the most nostalgic to me. That said, the 70’s was totally better overall (disco, doobie brothers, ccr, Chicago, Eagles, LSD, eurovasion)

1976. By 1999, I had completely lost interest and had stopped following the charts. I can name many songs from 1976, even if they weren't hits but I can't name a single song from 1999, no matter how big a hit it was.

1976, Without a shadow of a doubt. Late 90s music is pretty mediocre to be honest. Not as bad as the music made nowadays, but it definitely pales in comparison to the stuff made in the 70s.

I would never have known some good music from the '70s if it wasn't for a TV music show called 'Disco Rally' whose earlier recordings were re-broadcast on a local TV channel in the early '90s (my formative years).

Most tracks in my music collection are from the '80s era going up.

It is in the mid '90s when I started to proactively follow the billboard music charts, and listen to radio hits countdown shows like 'Rick Dee's Weekly Top 40'. I must say, I discovered music that I enjoyed and could relate to in the '90s that any music from the '70s.

There was good music from both, but as someone who really enjoys '70s and '80s music, I'd have to say I'd lean towards 1976. That isn't to say 1999 didn't have some good music too, though.

I was born in 1995 and often think I missed out on some pretty cool pop culture (although really, you can enjoy it at any time, not just during the era it came out in), and most of my favorite music is from before I was born. Even though there was some fun stuff in the '90s too, I was 4 when the '90s ended, so it isn't like I got to really experience much of it when it was fresh and new. Personally, I do not miss 2000's butt rock at all and eternally sick of it from when it was all the rage and constantly playing on the radio, and am not a fan of the mumble rap (or heavily rap/hip-hop/R&B influenced music, just not my taste and it seems to be everywhere; I wish rock would make a comeback, but not in the butt rock-y Five Finger Death Punch style), autotune, and jumbled noises that make up most of the music that seems to be playing on the radio a lot these days. There are a few good songs mixed in, but it seems like they're in the minority. I'm hoping soon the trend will shift to some fun stuff again! After all, we are in the beginning of a new decade and the trends should start shifting to something different at any time now, so I'm hoping it's an improvement for once!

    • Music from the first half of the 90s was generally far better than the stuff from the second half, IMO.

I tend to agree. I like the early '90s because they were still trailing off of the '80s and still retained a bit of that cool '80s sound.

Beavis and Butt-head always featured a lot of cool music videos from around that time (and that's another thing I miss, the older music videos! They used to be almost an art form and tell a story, and there's just something kind of magical about '80s and '90s music videos that can't be replicated).

        • Yes. Music videos had something magical about them. I think they put a lot more effort into making them back then.

I think so, too. A lot of them nowadays are just the person standing there and singing, or doing something ridiculous like twerking in front of the camera!

( Been listening to the album MFKR recently from Slipknot. It sounded a bit different because it was led by Anders Colsenfni. )

    70s disco wins.
Ain't nothing better than listening to old school disco on a hot summers day, on a balcony, drinking gin.
