Which of these expired cans of food would you be least likely to eat?

3-4 years past their best by/use by date (my previous question was about the expired tube of fish eggs)

pineapple slices 3
baked beans 4
beef chili 4
tomato paste 0
spaghetti sauce 0
creamy mushroom soup 3
albacore 7
green beans 1

Id throw it in the emergency food pile in the basement. Maybe one day a 20 year old can of rotten food will be luxury. Who knows.

    • It actually came from my emergency food pile that was stored in a shed outside.

Smart man! I need to get some more cans. My pile is mostly rice and beans and oils.

Cant forget about spices. Will be worth their weight in gold after a supply chain collapse. Spices grown from half way around the world. Good luck sourcing cinnamon in the apocalypse.

You have a decent chance to grow your own peppercorns.

          • Yeah I've been eating spices as well and a lot of them lost their flavor and turned to dust essentially.

Vaccum packed? Or where they just exposed to air? Spices theoretically last forever since most spices absorb moisture making rot impossible to take root. Just got to keep it away from ambient moisture and sunlight (UV degradation)

As a secondary thought for this experiment of yours have you thought of creating a hothouse (heated greenhouse) for your survival strategy?

It's a hard choice, but probably the chili. So many different ingredients in there, especially the beef, that I'd trust it less than something like beans that might taste or smell more obviously bad. I have very little experience with old food, though.

    • I've been eating the chili the last couple days and it's totally fine, still tastes good too... threw out the creamy mushroom soup cause it had a funky smell, like a cat litter box.

Is none an option? I feel like none should be an option. (An option that says "all of these are equally terrible and should be disposed of, not eaten.") One month past expiration date I would still risk it. Three years? No. I've lived through four food poisonings already. I want to live. I want to be healthy. I don't want to suffer in pain and agony as my insides are being ripped open and I'm force vomiting with a fever, shaking with cold. Not worth it.

I mean the eat by date doesnt mean it immediately becomes unfit for human consumption.

From my experience sometimes it can become unfit for consumption before the expiration date. And I certainly wouldn't risk waiting three years after the expiration date. That is not "immediately". That is three entire years later.

Yes and no. 3 years is a long ass time for normal packaged foods. 3 years for a can that has additional preservatives is trickier to pin down when it becomes inedible as there has been cases where canned foods has been good 20 years after it expired. Canned food as long as it isnt damaged can last for decades.

Food that had expired prior to its experation date has to of been damaged beforehand. Voiding posted experation date. Otherwise you could of made a decent case in court about the experation if it caused significant damage to your person.

If you personally dont want to risk it it's fine. But some of us have a lower standard for what we are willing to eat.

    • Okay but I've been slowly going through these, eating a small sample first in case I do get sick and so far no problems.

I would stay away from the meats and fish. That has a higher chance of going really bad.

Mushroom soup... cant imagine itll taste differently... like licking a hardwood floor.

        • I'm particularly apprehensive about the albacore, but will still give it a try... the beef chili was fine.

Really depends on how processed it was. I'm not partial to fish so the albacore would be on the toss pile even if it was fresh, I'd rather eat pine bread than that crap.
