What's my position even?

Hey everyone,

This is going to sound crazy but I don't know what position at work I am currently occupying. Maybe someone can shed some light? :')

So here's the story- The employment agency were I signed up at found a job opportunity for me at the government, more or less matching my profile. I couldn't quite tell *what* the application was for, though. Not exactly. There were some keywords mentioning digitization, publication and light development work (such as adjusting the design and functionality of their website). Now, okay, I am certified in SQL and PHP and that's in my CV of course, but I am by no means a professional, and definitely don't see myself becoming one. I just followed a home study/course that lasted three months. Anyway, I got some knowledge in the field which - fast forward - apparently was enough to talk myself through the interview.

Other than what's mentioned above, in the interview they stated they were looking for someone to process the many excel files into their SQL databases and check it for duplicated entries or typos, empty fields and whatnot, and then fix it. That'd be part of my job. Nevertheless, that still doesn't describe the function, does it?

Even faster forward! Yesterday was my first day at work. Everything went well. There was a LOT of information to take in, as there always is on the first day working for your new employer. For what it's worth- the guy walking me through is a senior automation engineer, whom clearly needs someone to help him with the tedious bulk work (that ultimately he's also responsible for), because he's already got a lot on his plate. That's where I come in.

With the information provided, what would you categorize me as? I do much more than an administration employee but I'd say less than a developer.

There's no file to look back to, because (over here) most of the time individuals sent from employment agencies are first being given a two month lasting trial period before they receive a contract.

I just kind of want to know what range I should aim for during future salary negotiating, and obviously also have an answer to friends and family that ask me about my new function. :-P

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

How about "Data Analyist" with a side order of web site managment.

@Nikclair & CDmale4fem - That's what I thought. (Junior) Data Analyst, however when I look up the responsibilities of that position, its a lot more than I do. Ah well, at least it's a decent comparison to keep in mind.

    Thanks! :)

It is but you are a contractor and they don't know you. They aren't just going to open up their database on day one. As you prove yourself you will get more and more responsibilities. Best of luck in your new endevour.

Eventually you'll either classify yourself as a data wonk or script jockey. You'll figure it out.

Junior software tester or analyst most likely. Salary range depends where you are and what company you are working for. Definately entry level.
