Funding the police more for better training like a 4th of their time should be dedicated to training not 3 hours every year. Raise the bar for continued employment with physicals and tests. To counteract these changes pay the police officers more money, cause paying someone shit wages to risk their lives is a good way to get shitty cops making shitty decisions.
Train cops in martial arts such as takedowns and chokeholds. Chokeholds when done correctly can dramatically change the situation for a belligerent unarmed person. If s cop is more confident about their unarmed capabilities than they wouldnt have to resort to deadly force at a drop of a hat because they dont know any advanced combat techniques.
Give the police more funding for better equipment such as bullet proof vests and body cameras.
You dont pay schools less money and expect them to get better. We need an overhaul in police funding in major cities. That being said with the scale the police operating at the numbers of police deaths are actually at a reasonable number. I mean millions of police interactions happen peacefully and it's only in those choice situations that end in bloodshed. We need to stand together with both sides, police and protesters right the wrongs with better funding and reform. Not tearing it all down due to a few incidents cause that's just stupid.
Yeah the standing apart is part of the problem. The whole idea with defunding departments is that a lot of what cops do isn't necessary. You don't need somebody with a gun dealing with somebody walking down the street with an open beer.
Police unions are famously opposed to any type of reform at all. More than defunding police I think we need to completely abolish police unions. Unions are for protecting working people from the coal company, not powerful agents of the state who are armed and authorized to kill. Police have historically broken up union protests for the sake of the company the union is striking against, so why do they get the most powerful union in the country?
The other problem is that while the majority of police interactions aren't violent, the majority of police interactions also aren't actually stopping an active crime. Most of the time they're just showing up to file a report or stopping somebody walking down the street minding their own buisiness. The violent interactions generally never put any accountability on the officer.
A good example of something that bothers me is only 15 states have specific law against officers having sex with detained people. That means that in 35 states, including the one I live in, a police officer can pull you over and rape you and argue that you consented if it goes to court. What kind of person doesn't see this as a problem?
Taking down the police unions would be good. I mean doctors cant unionize for obvious reasons but their pay offsets most problems from not being in a union. So pay officers better, but no unions or severely cripple the unions ability to make department wide decisions.
Unions shouldn't be shielding people from prosecution for criminal activity. If a ticket collector shoots a train passenger the transit union doesn't step up get them off and get their jobs back.
Unions should only be used in jobs with dangerous environments AND arent a absolute essential job such as doctors. A union is needed if the conditions are a high enough risk and it's not economically viable to pay the workers that much money.
Being a taxi driver is more dangerous than being a cop. Fishemran, pilots, roofers, all more dangerous than being a cop.
I feel like the difference is the union protects them from unsafe work conditions and low wages, not if a roofer shoots somebody who startles them and they get a pass because they chose a dangerous job
I think the police shouldn't give a fuck about idiots calling them racist all the time. Sure, there might be a few bad apples out there, but the police as a whole is NOT racist. Blacks also commit WAY more crimes against whites than the other way around. This is simply a FACT. Just check the statistics. Moreover, George Floyd does NOT deserve to be treated like some God. I'm sick of blacks always playing the victim. Take some goddamn responsibility for once!
So you consider the police system to not need any reform? The current system is perfect and isn't in need of major reform?
The few bad apples argument makes me laugh, because the actual expression is that a few bad apples RUIN THE BARREL. By continuing to protect the bad apples the entire barrel is rotten.
These are cheap apples though so it makes a cheap cider. Make a better quality cider. Make the positive changes FIRST than replace the system. Dont toss the entire barrel out before making another from scratch.
I've taken the apple analogy too far.
Dude at my job whites are the minority by alooooot. Like 80% black. Having met them and known them day to day I 100% believe that statistic. Some are really cool but goddammit some are straight up nigg***.
I don't know, because to tell you the truth police officers have always treated me quite well. I've had more than my share of bad experiences in this life, but I can't recall any that have come at the hands of law enforcement officers.
Honestly I made this topic cause Im usually just like "fuck pigs" on here but I kinda wanted a real conversation. The problem isn't just individual cops, its the whole system. They make it like everyone would riot if the cops all didn't show up to work. Since I'm apparently a "Criminal" if I don't like cops I've been playing a game with myself called "What would be a good crime to do if the cops all didnt show up to work"
I could kill somebody, but the FBI still exists and the cops wouldn't have stopped the murder anyway
I could rob your house, but I might get shot
I could rob people on the street, same thing get shot or beaten up for possibly zero dollars anyway
I could rob a store, but they'll get me on camera FBI can investigate
I could sell drugs openly on the street, but I'll probably get jumped
Could try pickpocketing, hard and time consuming, possibly for nothing
So none of the reasons I'm not doing any of these crimes have anything to do with fear that a cop is going to stop me. Because cops don't stop crime, they keep vulnerable people down. When I was living in my van having a cop around didn't make me feel safer. I'd get harassed constantly even though sleeping in a vehicle isn't a crime in my county.
I believe the current policing situation has nothing to do with law enforcement and everything to do with keeping people down who are getting a raw deal from the system. The last thing we want to do is help homeless people, so let's keep them beaten down so they cant rise up against us.
like said above hand to hand training. Better funding. I'm not trained hand to hand and if someone came at me and I had a weapon on me im going straight for that weapon. Its just instinct.
Most of these incidents with the police like with Brooks in Atlanta happens when people try to resist arrest. Nothing good can happen from resisting arrest. He was caught drunk driving which results in an arrest. If he allowed the cops to arrest him he would still be alive. He assaulted 2 cops, stole a stun gun, and then fired it at the cop. What did he expect the cop to do, say oh well have a nice day.
The incident with Floyd is a different story. I don't think you could find anyone that thinks what the cop did was okay. The cop with the knee on him that killed him deserves the death penalty. The other 3 cops deserve very harsh penalties.
Defunding is not the answer if anything more funding is necessary. Also, make changes to how the union operates. These unions have too much power and allow these bad cops to continue to keep working without any punishment. I know people in unions and they tell me it is almost impossible for a person to get fired from the job.
Police shouldn't have a union in the first place. Unions are for protecting tradespeople from predatory corporations, not powerful agents of the state. If a train conductor kills somebody the transit union doesn't get them off.
Im for defunding in terms of having trained people deal with specific situations. You don't need a person with a gun and authority to kill dealing with busted tailights or homeless people sleeping on the street. Cops make it out like they're in danger constantly and that's not true. Most of the time they're filing reports after a crime happened, a regular guy with a clipboard could do that. Police investigation of robberies costs more money than the total amount of money stolen in all robberies with very low percent success rate.
Invest in electromagnetic bombs that destroy all recording devices in the vicinity so police can kill indiscriminately without being scrutinized by social media picking every detail apart and presenting the execution out of context.
To create a outside federal organization thats sole job is to investigate police misconduct. Right now the police have the power to investigate themselves. I truly believe that is the root of this problem.
all white male cops should have to be sissys or homosexuals that are attracted to black men, that way, the black men would have a better chance of not getting killed by the cops. It seems to me that the only white guys that give black men any respect are gay or sissys
That would be a bad idea, since as I said above in 35 states an officer can rape you and claim you consented. Having officers more sexually attracted to people they're detaining would probably be an issue.
Also this isn't "Durr cops should be nicer to black people" it's what are some positive things that can come from the possibility for much needed reigning in of the criminal element of police.
I was watching Stephen Colbert At Home, and his guest (legal head of NCAAP or something like that, sorry I'm not American) was saying how funding can rather be directed at services like social workers, etc to aid police when they're called in to something where lethal force isn't required.
So at the moment if there's some mental dude hollering shit in the street, the police will be called in. Problem is these motherfuckers with guns are not qualified to deal with mental health situations. Send them to crime scenes, to criminals. Not situations where compassion and understanding are needed.
Ive heard this and it sounds like a good idea. A cop with a gun isn't going to deal with an autistic person getting violent well.
Being serious and not just like FTP to piss off bootlickers, cops really don't do much. They show up where a crime happened and take a report. Even in terms of preventing crime. You don't need somebody with a gun enforcing broken tailight bulbs.
Didn't the usa already defund the Police in places that are famous for having some of the worst crime in the world? Didn't spike Lee make a film called Chiraq comparing Chicago to Iraq like this because there was not enough police to help the bad hoods?
Cops don't really help stop active crimes though... If you get jumped on the street or somebody breaks into your house a cop won't stop it...
This topic keeps coming up so I was trying to be positive about stuff that might go well from all this stuff
