What kind of boss would you be?

I'm afraid I'd be the kind of boss I hate, so I choose to remain a peon.

Too nice, weak 13
Firm but fair 27
Mean asshole 6

I wouldn't know how to deal with non-self starters or unmotivated people. I'd just want to get rid of them.

I'm the boss of a Peugeot dealership and I have my own business. I'm strict, but I try to be fair and lend a helping hand if someone needs help. But I will not tolerate laziness and sloppy work. 3 strikes and you're out. We are a team, we work together to provide our customers the best of service.

Random smoke breaks are absolutely banned. If I (a non smoker) can hold out to either of the two breaks we have, so can you. I get going to the bathroom, getting coffee and having a small chat with other people, that's good.
I can accept having a *quick* smoke every 2 hours, but 15 minute smoke breaks every 35 minutes are are not allowed.

Only on very slow days (middle of summer and January) I let smokers smoke as much as they want. During that time nobody buys cars anyway and there is very little work going on... There are days where you work for an hour and wait for the work day to end. Last July I played through GTA San Andreas in one day at work XD

Only applies to the dealership. I can't see what my workers are doing while on the road, or at a customer. So they probably smoke as much as they want.

Cleanliness is an absolute must. We can't have smelly muppets making the entire dealership look bad. Professionalism and respect are to be maintained.

Naturally, it's not all rules and no perks.
If someone's car broke down for example, I'm ok with letting an employee take one of our test-drive vehicles home, or let someone clock off early if they have an appointment, or something.

At my gardening/ cleaning business I'm more strict, Workers must regularly wash work clothes, look fresh, clean the equipment and vans and be as polite as possible.
Most of the customers are wealthier elderly Germans. It's really easy to piss them off if you're not polite, say something stupid, or if you start doing something stupid like cursing at a lawn mower that won't start, talking on the phone while working, etc...
I've also told my workers not to blare loud music from the vans, or play loud music while working. It's a very rude and trashy thing to do in Germany.
Vans are to be driven carefully and abide the law.

The old folks pay top money for good work and professionalism.
I always tell my customers to notify me if there is any issue and I will deal with it as quickly as possible.

All of my workers are poor Bulgarians and Romanians and a Turkish guy, so I often fill up the work fridge with beer, so they can enjoy a drink after work. Sometimes I'll treat everyone out to lunch on weekends. The way to a Eastern European man's heart is through drink and food.
It's a cheap way to keep them happy, without raising pay.

Not worked in a while because of babbies, but when I did work I was a boss for a few years. I surprised myself with how strict I was, because in day to day life I'm quite laid back. I felt a burning passion (still do, miss it) for the work we were doing - to me it was the most important thing in the world. I didn't understand that the people working for me might not care as much as I did. I just expected everyone to be married to their jobs in the same way that I was. Also it was a male dominated environment and I had a bit of a chip on my shoulder about that. Made me want to prove to everyone that I wasn't a soft girly and I was there to get on with things.

I have changed career now so when I do go back to work it will be different anyway, but I do wonder if I ever went back to the old place if I would be a bit softer now that I understand what it's like to have a family waiting for you at home. You can care about your job and not have to be a workaholic. I finally get that now.

The other day my manager was like "If you want to be a team lead, Jan, ask me and I'll set it up." I declined since I know the kind of boss I'd be. I'd be way too nice. XD

Ive never understood why we do so much for Israel. I like Jews but Israel and USA seems to be a one way relationship. We do so much for them and what do we get in return?

            • I think the USA is in a one way relationship with everyone. We make horrible trade deals with so many countries and they think it's fair or right.

Im not normally a boss, but occasional I find myself in boss roles at work due to fluctuating work flows.

I try to be understanding and fair, pretty easy going and all that. But if I'm dealing with true repetitive incompetence from someone i know can do better, i'll be more strict and ya know ....become more of an asshole gradually.

    so ....all of the above?

  • I've been in a supervisory position a couple of times. I started out way too nice and for a while there I was a mean asshole because I couldnt get people to do what needed to be done without being a jerk. This was all my fault however because I hadnt learned how to motivate people without being a pushover or a dick. As the years went on my bossing skills got better and I became more effective. Then I quit my job.

Too nice probably, It was that way in high school when I sorta kinda was the manager of a pizza kitchen. Had to tell a 16 year old once to get out of the bathroom stall where he was fapping and make some damn pizzas!
