What did you want to be when you grew up?

I was just listening to a radio pundit act disappointed because kids in the US want to become social media influencers rather than astronauts.

That made me think, though. Little kids usually follow the rule of cool when it comes to answering the question "what do you want to be when you grow up". Being an astronaut has probably fallen out of favor because that job isn't really there. We're not still doing manned space exploration, are we? We just send scientists up there to float around.

When I was little, I wanted to be an architect. Never got close to attaining that career, I mainly chose it because I liked the sound of the word, but at least it wasn't Tiktok.

What did you want to be? And if you read down this far, how many "cool" careers do you think are left that aren't entertainment (movie star, social media star, music star, racing star, etc)?

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

I aspired to become someone who is very passionate about computers.

Now I take my time into learning programming and as another hobby I learn how to fix and clean devices since I now work at a repair shop.

Fixing devices is pretty fun as well as cleaning.

I wanted to be a veterinarian, but I never pursued it. I think I just liked the idea of being around cute animals all the time, but I didn't like the actual medical part lol But then I liked Journalism, and basically work in a Journalistic-type job now and I love it. I've been writing my whole life so I guess it was bound to happen. Although I went through a lot of ups and downs with other jobs to get to where I am.

Artist. Not enough adults told me that I sucked.

Encouragement is good but objective criticisms is what i lacked and thus i fucked myself in my education workload in highschool, ill preparing myself for any other career.

That being said I like trucking, I didnt know I would thoroughly enjoy driving.

I regularly switched between wanting to be a journalist and wanting to be an entomologist. I still sort of wish I was an entomologist, but my weakness subject in school was math.

I'm okay with being an editor.

Lots of things! I wanted to be a telephone operator, a paleontologist, an archeologist, a ballet dancer, a fashion designer, a model, and a singer for starters. I guess I really do have ADHD! 😱

I wanted to be a roller coaster designer / builder. Seriously. I had even envisioned a job title of something like 'Scream Engineer' or 'Scream Specialist'. 🎢

Technically that is also a job in entertainment.

Here as well, roller coaster design actually requires a lot of STEM knowledge. It counts.

Bah I don't wanna live in garbage.

Did you know the first eco friendly homes were small huts built with bricks made of cow shit?

I wanted to box professionally. I grew up sparring Caleb Plant we trained together. I met my wife and we got serious and she says she feels bad looking back because she would try to prevent me from going to the gym which caused me to start getting messed up in sparring more then I started doing drugs and quit training id only spar sometimes. Caleb Plant went on to be world champion and has made over 20 million dollars in his career so far. He's got a really big fight coming up next month. Everyone serious that I went to the gym with went pro and fought on TV. Only Caleb became champ which was no surprise that guy was always different.

Also entertainment. Boxers fight so that others can watch and be entertained by you beating each other up.

OP here. The entertainment thing was really just to weed out stuff that wasn't constructive. I think we can all agree that sports is a better career aspiration than YouTube.

That part I think id have down packed. I think my press conferences would be bonkers. Im good at arguing and can roast ppl well.

Calebs got good press conferences too but he's not as goofy he doesnt make ppl laugh he's very serious. He gets in fist fights at every other press conference. They dont let him face off. Calebs crazy he will punch you when hes alone and you got 10 dudes with you. I seen a dude pull a knife on Caleb and he still beat the guy up. That vids somewhere on youtube.

Actually, I also wanted to be an architect. Always been a major architecture-buff, especially for the classic stuff. I like to design buildings when I'm bored, mostly neoclassical palaces.

I ended-up living on social welfare like a total bum, cuz I'm too shit at maths to get into architecture-school. Now I spend most of my time producing music and drawing buildings.

Are you trying to become a professional artist? They say hobbies can sometimes make for great careers, and knowledge of classical architecture seems like too interesting of a talent to waste.
