Yep, that's why people from the northern countries flock to the Spanish and Mediterranean beaches, that's why Florida and Southern California are called vacation lands, and that's why Disney picked Florida and Southern Cal to build, because everyone just loves going to the beaches and family outing at -4 or 25f degrees. Let's talk about how much people love cold weather in February. They are talking mass fatalities this year because of lack of heating fuel, because people like it cold. Oh, yes I have seen all those guys that drool over the girl dressed in her parka and mucklucks.

I know there is the argument that there are a lot of people that do snow/ski vacatíons but that's a drop in the bucket compared to warm weather vacations. Even northern vacation spots close in the fall.

I can take off my clothes and find some water or pool to cool down, I can't put on enough clothes (and still walk) to stay warm enough to spend hours outside in winter.

No thanks I'll take warm or hot weather!

    • Still overrated. Having to sweat sucks. Also, as if a shitload of people didn't die from the heat this summer.

I also prefer cold weather. I like the feeling of being wrapped in layers of clothes. In warm/hot weather I can't wear as many clothes and I feel extremely uncomfortable and exposed. Also the heat makes me really anxious for some reason.

Pretty much yeah. If it was up to me, fall or spring would be vacation season and not summer. Who wants to do ANYTHING in the summer?! The problem is this:

Schools don't open in the summer because no one wants to go out in 100+ degree (fahrenheit) weather. However, we use the fact that the family is free to go on vacation (even if you don't have any kids, you probably have friends that do). Then suddenly everyone thinks summer is cool and fun when it's the opposite, because we spend all that vacation time at the beach tanning our hides.

Everybody hates summer, we just don't have any other choice. If kids had to attend regular classes in the summertime, test scores would probably drop to zero, so we all just suck it up and go back to work during what are actually the nicest times of the year.

I agree. You can dress up for the cold; but you can only take off so many cloths - or even go nude and still sweat badly.

You can even do cold weather tent camping and stay warm: Note that I've been tent camping as a teenager 3 times when the actual temperature was -30F with a wind chill much colder - It works ok if you know the cold weather camping tricks and pack enough food. Our Boy Scout troop went camping every month of the year.

I hate this line of reasoning because I will still be freezing cold in cold weather in multiple layers of clothes.. Plus I hate wearing so many clothes, I so prefer to be able to put on shorts and a top and not have to worry it's too cold out

There is no reason to feel cold in cold weather. It has more to do with food and conditioning than anything else, which are things that you can change.

If you have a lower than average body fat your experience will be very different..

            Nope!

I was the fittest of my life as a teenager (running cross country and the 2 mile in track) with very low body fat except for when I was backpacking the Appalachian Trial in my mid 30's after several weeks (you get super fit then too)... and winter camping was not a problem for me or for anyone else in very good condition. It was the fattest people who had the most problems with cold weather (although people with a modest amount of fat also did well - but those with excessive fat did not).

Same with the misnamed Ice Fishing (I didn't fish for ice) where we spent much of a day out on a windy lake.

Trust me - it has to do with diet. You need to eat a high calorie diet when outdoors in the winter (and fat contains the highest calories - so a high fat diet usually worked best on such trips). You are cold because you are calorie negative - and that's dangerous in extreme cold weather.

I've had the experience of rescuing a lady from a car in the ditch in the winter who was shivering badly (and nonstop). I handed her an oversized Hershey bar (7 oz) from my winter emergency kit and told her to eat it immediately.

She objected that would break her diet. I told her that her level of shivering meant that she was very close to going into hypothermia and dying in the cold and if she didn't want to end up in the hospital or dead to eat the bar. She did. I then drove her to a restaurant and bought her a large hearty meal - and told her to eat it all... she did. By then the shivering had stopped and she started to feel a lot better. She then said "thank you" and I explained that in cold weather that you have to eat extra calories as your body needs more calories to handle the cold - and it won't wreck your diet if you do it right. But, if you ever start shivering in the cold that you instantly need to eat a large chocolate bar (or similar) to get major calories into your body fast (and she should have an emergency food supply with such oversized chocolate bars in her car for winter driving).

She used the payphone in the restaurant to call someone to pick her up (this was before cell phones) and I stayed with her until that happened.

I've seen other cases that were not so extreme. Chocolate bars are wonderful to have around during the winter - especially if spending time outdoors. Water too.

if I have to eat calorie surplus to maintain body temperature then that weather fucking sucks.

    • Obviously you'd disagree, you're a freaking aussie. lol. You turn to ice cubes once the thermostat dips below 10 C.

Disagree. I freeze too easily. It only has to be a tiny bit chilly inside for my hands to feel like ice cubes and my nails to get dark blue. Not sure whats wrong with me and heat sucks but at least when its hot I can sit by a fan or go out and sit in the shadow with a bottle of water. Its way harder for me to get warm.

Meh, I'll take the warm weather over cold any day. If I don't have to drive in snow, shovel snow, or deal with snow in general I'm happy.
