Solicitor tried my door handle when i didn't answer the door

My doorbell rang, I looked through the peephole and saw it appeared to be a solicitor of some type and I didn't recognize him, so I didn't answer. I was still nearby when I heard the doorknob jiggling. Thankfully, I always keep my door locked, but it weirded me out. I opened the door after he left to find a card trying to sell something with his name and number on it. I am thinking about calling the company. I don't want to overreact, but I just think it's highly inappropriate to try to open someone's door to their house like that. I mean, what if the door would've been unlocked? It would've been even more inappropriate for him to come in or look around!

Am I overreacting or is this really weird for a stranger of any kind?

By the way, this was not the screen door, this was the actual door to the inside of the house.

    Ugh...you should not only call the company but the police as well. Someone tried to break into your house, FFS. A lot of people who b & e pretend to be solicitors to suss out a property to rob.

    This is seriously scary as fuck. I hope you're ok...

    google the phone number on the card, then proceed. It sounds like a fake solicitor "casing the joint"

    Yeah, creepy as fuck, what was the madafaka intending to do if it was open? Or maybe a burglar who felt there was someone inside and left some company card as false trace..

    Mate, that's a brilliant way to steal shit. Don't call the company, but go and see the police. I would tell them that you think it could be completely innocuous and that, but it may well not be. If you call that company then it could well tip them off, but if you give the card to the police, and it is something like a fake company, then they'll have to come up with business sales and the like damn quick.

    Some sales people are really creepy and desperate. Im not excusing what he did or that he might be a criminal, but I wouldnt put it past a salesman to do that shit. Where I work the salespeople are annoying, overstepping their place and always busy with some shady side hustle.

    This just happened with my door dash. He knocked, but the instructions are just to leave it at the door. Then he knocked again so I got up this time, then he tried the door, knocked again and tried to open the door. By this time I answered in my underwear and was like yo wtf mate? So then he hands me my food and takes a picture of me holding it in my underwear as proof of delivery. I reported him.

    You should have opened the door and kicked him in the ballsack as hard as you can. Thats one reason i always keep my door locked when im home. Im a guy but i dont want snyone walking in if im out of shower wal,ing naked in my place.

        Kick him again and again. First make sure you have phone in hand to get a picture of the perps face, then kick hella hard with steel toed shoes, and then slam door, lock it and call 911 and rin out the back if you can and have a back exit.
        Or you could always open the door with an axe over your shoulder and a headless chicken in other hand. Open the door and tell them "you are right on time".
