Shaking arm side to side to lose weight?

This is going to be weird.
Well my dad recently apparently came up with a new exercise to lose arm fat (bat wings) by shaking arm from side to side. He doesn't have fat arnms except for a big belly, but he said it could be another way to tone arms.

I tried it myself and I agree it does feel like it's working, but now I'm not sure if it's actually effective or just weird.

Sorry if this post doesn't make sense.

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

Kinda, just waving your arm around will build muscle eventually, but it not as effective as doing something like push-ups.

Also the way your body stores and uses fat, you can't decide where the fat you burn comes from. You could work out your arms for weeks and not see any big differences because there will still be fat over the muscles.

Sorry, but this is a fat person's attempt at exercise. Waving your massive sausage links around is not going to help.

In the 1920s - 1940s gyms had a fat shaker that was supposed to shake the fat off. They're no longer in gyms so I dont think they worked.

If you're moving any muscles then you'll burn fat, and if you're moving those specific muscles then the area will be affected. It's probably an inefficient way to doing it though if it's not already an established exercise.

    • I read somewhere that you can’t specifically target where you lose fat on your body but you can target where you build muscle

Yeah, that sounds right to me. Fat works off reserves whereas the areas you specifically do your exercises will work those muscles.

Yes. Spot weight reduction does not work. In fact, if you exercise one particular part of your body, it will lose weight slower than the rest of your body due to the muscle buildup.
