Putkin is trying to regain any territory from the old Soviet Union in an attempt to show how important Russia is.

Putin started it... all of it (and it started in 2014 with Ukraine).

Ukraine is fighting to be its own independent country and not to be subjugated by Russia as one of Russia's pawns.

Ukraine was an independent country before they were foced into the USSR by Russia. They absolutely want nothing to do with Russia politically. They have a lot of friendships with the Russian people and used to have a lot of business relations as well.

The only reason why Ukraine wasnt apart of nato is because they had a relatively poor economy. Something that you have to contribute in nato if you want to join.

        That's not the reason.

The Ukrainian Goverment was rather corrupt, and both EU and NATO required it to become more democratic and accountable (less corrupt).

Ukraine was making significant progress on that... and would have likely been eligible for NATO membership in 2015 - 2016.

Then Putin created the mess in Easter Ukraine and Crimea in 2014. NATO will not admit any country with an active border dispute as they don't want an "instant" war.

My wife was visiting her mom during her last days when it all went down with Eastern Ukraine and Crimea. She lived (and still owns the Condo) in Eastern Ukraine. Her brother and I emergency evacuated her after she buried her mom as Russian tanks had crossed the border and could have been in her city in less than a day.

The airline she had a return ticket with would not allow us to change the return date. They told me that would only be possible if the airport had been closed. At which point how in the world would they have been able to get her out of there.

So we spent a minor fortune and got her on a flight 2 days early. While the Russian tanks did not move on her city. She was clearly shell shocked when she got home as she was used to the military aircraft using the local airport near her house where there was a major military injury tent hospital set up. Every-time an aircraft flew over for months after she was back in the US she would panic expecting a possible attack.

Just saying that you would probably suffer massive internal bleeding just walking up to the elephants foot.

Not until after he got their chance to lick it.

The internal bleeding would likely start within 2 hours, and he would be dead likely within 2 days (and perhaps just 12 hours).

But, they would have done it and could die a happy person.

I think what we all need is for a big, strong, hairy, sweaty, über gay leather man to take Vladimir Putin from behind, and make him his bitch. It would be a good thing, because it would shatter Putin's psyche. 😁👻💩🦍

It depends who you ask. The west is saying that its ONLY about regaining soviet territory and as biden put it "nothing to do with ukraine joining nato". Russia will say its because of the issues in donbas region and the fact that they want to join NATO which violated an agreement made to Gorbachev that nato wouldnt move east "even an inch". Theres documents that prove this agreement was made. The media is claiming it wasnt.

I personally think its mostly to do with getting back soviet territory and NATO was just fuel on the fire. Also the fact that USA had such a bad embarrassment in Afghanistan and the fact that when biden was vp under obama they basically handed him Crimea. They think the US is predictable and weak right now.

The conflict is because Ukraine is likely to join NATO and Russia does not want NATO having territories so close to Russia because it would render the country vulnerable in case of future conflicts.

I really understand Putin and his move.

Ukraine being in NATO will for Russia like sleeping with a partner who always has a knife under its pillow. You cannot sleep well.

To play devil's advocate, the states might have wanted to push back if the U.S.S.R had won the cold war and now half the American States were aligned with the enemy and hypotheically, say Virginia or a state on your doorstep was about to join an alliance with your enemy, one might feel backed into a corner.

I am by no means trying to justify Putin's actions, but it is necessary to view situations from different perspectives.

I of course support Democracy and capitalism as freeing humanity from the shackles of authoritarianism and collectivism.

That analogy only works if one buys Putin's fantasy that Ukraine is not actually a nation in its own right, and it has always been merely a subordinate province of Russia.

A better analogy would be an alternative history where Canada was a sovereign country following the American War of Independence, it was subsumed by the USA during some political upheaval in the early 20th century, then regained its right to self-determination during another crisis before the turn of the millennium. If there were influential people in the USA who made no secret of their wish for Canada to come back under US control, it would be understandable if Canada sought defensive foreign alliances to deter the much more powerful county on their border. If the USA genuinely had no ill-intentions, this should not be a huge concern; if the USA actually intended to eventually force Canada to rejoin in a new Union of North America (or whatever), then they might well act just as Putin has.

Putin of course started it and only he knows why.
The idea he's trying to spread is they need to "protect" themselves from Ukraine. He's bonkers and he wants ukraine and to start war.
