Petrified of shots

So for a long time now, I have had really bad allergies. I mean REALLY bad allergies. I finally made the decision to get allergy shots. Though there is one problem. I am terrified of shots. It's not to a point where I would freak out or wouldn't let the doctor do it, I let it happen, but it scares me just thinking about it. It's understandable when you're at a young age, but even though I am now older, I still can't get over the thought of getting a shot. Is it normal? Is there a way to make myself less nervous?

I still hate getting shots as an adult. Ironic, because I love getting tattoos and have piercings, but even the piercing needles did make me uncomfortable.

I've been stuck a lot and am much more desensitized to it now but it's still always rather unpleasant. I just try to distract myself. Engage in conversation, think about something that requires concentration, try to make a little story or something in your head. Best way to get through it is just focus your mind as away from what's happening as can be.

Plus, an allergy shot is quick, and that's a comfort. :P I think part of my hatred for needles stems to IVs and how much I hate having them in. (surgeries and bad stomach problems, lots of IV fluid)
