Opinions on the confederate flag

What are your thoughts on the confederate flag?

Where I live it's something you see everyday. They're on bumper stickers, shirts, on the back of trucks, at peoples houses. It is quite normal here and rarely causes arguments.

I like it. I have some clothing and a cool flask. But I dont wear it in the city because black people dont like it. Its a beautiful flag and it looks really cool on clothing like a hoodie. Explain why or why not you like it.

The American Flag, both the National and the Confederate are important parts of American reality. They are our history, and deserve respect.

    Black people want respect
    Chinese people want espect

    Well White deserve respect too

Granted we have outsmarted, outnumbered, out-Lawed most of you (not sure about the Chinese)

    But now we are here.

Most of us had nothing to do with the prior injuries.

    Let it go

Live in Peace, Enjoy ypur Life.

  • I dislike most flags, because i think they suppress people's inviduality. People ascribe so much value to those things to the point where, at least in the states, you gotta stand for the damn thing even at a football game. I dislike stars and bars for the same reason: it's a piece of fabric and everyone's gotta have an opinion (and the right one, at that) about it. It can stay or go, but in general, if you fly it, i assume that you are the sort to get mad if people dont stand for the american flag at any and all intervals, but you will threaten secession if a liberal politician is elected/does a thing.

I see what u mean. Those dudes that get mad about that also really believe in the constitution. Which is why when they succeeded the confederate constitution was literally word for word except one amendment that said "slavery can never be outlawed". They feel the constitution isnt respected enough in the USA.

Ok here's my viewpoint as I'm not an African American/black etc.

I don't like it, sure it never held any power over me, but it's very similar to a swastika.

I think it should be retired and not glorified.

If you love the south, then get a bumper sticker with chicken n waffles on it, or some grits idc.

But I'm not surprised when ppl are offended by it, because it has been used as a symbol of hate.

(Also--speaking of swastika, a lot of those "good ole boys" with iron cross n eagle tats, lightning bolts on their lapels and swastika flags flying also support HEAVILY the Confederate flag)

So, if you've noticed, there's a bit of a theme here..

Those same good ol boys that fly the swastika also fly the American flag. I think when you see it where you live its safe to assume whoevers flying it is an asshole. But if you come to the south you'll see it has a different meaning and actual nice people rock the flag who dont care about race and whatnot. These people will argue the flag isnt racist and just because you interpret it different doesnt mean they should stop if they dont interpret it that way.

I'm indifferent towards it. In the end to me it's just a pattern, a flag. *shrugs*

There are in fact several historic meanings to the Confederate Flag, and I can respect some of them, and some of them I scorn.

However; The Confederacy lost the war - and rather badly at that. Why celibate the flag of a looser? Do you want to be a looser too? (I suggest you think about what you would like to achieve in life...).

Then there is the fact that even what I respect as good values of the Confederacy have long ago been replaced by modern fake values by the people who have used the Confederate Flag as a symbol for these other ideas the last 40-50 years.

So the Confederate Flag no longer means even those good things that I saw as part of the civil war Confederacy.

I see no redeeming value for the Confederate Flag outside of being displayed in various cemeteries where Confederate Solders are buried or in various war museums.

The flag has different meanings for different people. A lot of people that arent from the south view it as being purely about racism so they dont understand why people in the south wont stop rocking it. People in the south feel that to them its not about racism so why should they quit rocking it because someone else has a different interpretation of it.

Its viewed as being the souths flag around here. There's a lot of stereotypes of southern people like they're thought of as being poor, inbred, stupid, backwards, and overall lower class. And in a way it's them putting their finger up to those people that dont like them and saying "Im that guy you dont like you arent gonna tell me what to do". Thats one of the reasons we call it the rebel flag here not the confederate flag.

Also if I'm from Tennessee and I move to rural Alabama if I rock that flag there I'm automatically part of the club. But if I move to the North I have to try to change my accent to hide from the lower class stereotype. Its kind of like if a gay person from California moves to New York they may feel out of place but if they rock the LGBT flag in New York then they can automatically relate to others that rock the flag.

But also these are the same people that often join the military and fly the American flag above all. It's just turned into being the symbol of the south and a symbol of southern pride.

Why don't you list the symbolic values that you see in the Confederate Flag - and see how many of them the southern US negro population agree with (which it varies from state to state southern negros make up about 20% of the population of the old Confederacy.

If you can find a lot of agreement - then you are onto something.

If you can find very little or no agreement - then you really need to ask why, and consider that perhaps other peoples opinions may have some basis in truth.

its long lost any original intent and become a meme that jackasses use to be provocative and the opposite polarity jackasses clutch pearls & express mock outrage about

Yeah lots of people fly it to be provocative it symbolizes being a rebel. I dont wear it to intentionally provoke people thats why I read the room before I put on my rebel hat or something. Not gonna wear it to starbucks or whole foods

Honestly I find the design atrocious from an aesthetic point of view.

It's not solely the flag of slavery. Nor is it solely a flag of state freedom. I find some states worse than federal goverment; when it comes to regulation and general freedoms. Your governors contributed far more to your personal suffering during covid than what the federal powers could do.

People can wave whatever they want. Just hire someone to do some logo, it's way better than any flag.
