Non u.s. residents-general opinions on americans?

How do citizens the world over view Americans? So far on this site, I've seen Americans, or -yanks- described as fat, war loving, dumb, and aggressive with firearms without reason....
I remember being taught in elementary school that the whole world over loved us, and loved our country and considered America the greatest land in creation.
Am I to believe that we school children were lied to by our own school system?
Does anyone in the world look up to America anymore?
Have they ever?
Is it normal, that as an American, I feel the citizens of the rest of the world think poorly of me?

    I met lots of lovely people when I was over there. I stayed in the south. Have to say, 90% of the people I met as I was in transit through northern states were fucking cunts. But to be fair, it was in airports. Practically everyone turns into a cunt at the airport.

    Plus I know some lovely people on here who are from northern states :)

    Oh. While on a nature trail walk thingy, we ran into tourists from Idaho, and I got asked where I was from. When I said "Australia", I got asked if that was around the area. That did nothing to dismiss the stereotype of American ignorance...

    Oh and Walmart is no where near as bad as peopleofwalmart.com led me to believe.

      Never judge anyplace by the people you encounter in the airport. That holds true the world over.

      And God no, the entire population is not like the people seen in Walmart or on peopleofwalmart.com. lol.

        Oh I know peopleofwalmart isn't the general population. But I was expecting it to be the population of Walmart. I wanted some entertainment, dammit. Didn't see even one damn freak :(

      I'm from New Hampshire orginally, and I promise you they're quite friendly. =P They're more open to unique characters than the south, which is still rather friendly as well, but not incredibly open. Florida isn't the home of the kindest people, but everyone is overly friendly.. In other words, I've noticed that people are very fake here. Every time I talk to someone from up north who has been here, they agree. People from the New England states are more reserved and community oriented.

      lol, Yeah, we aren't completely sensitive to other cultures. As a whole, we remain ignorant to other cultures because they don't generally enter our lives- unless you go online to sites like this or play video games. I personally never had a friend from another country til I came on this site, myself. Course, I studied geography in high school so, I know where Australia is.... In any case, most Americans are rather sheltered. We have so much in our own back yard that we forget other people even exist... =/

        I must say though, I never thought of Americans as arrogant until I talked to people from other areas. Not gonna lie either, I'm pretty arrogant even compared to my American pals. So it was harder for me to see til I had something to compare it to.

        Oh, Walmart. lol. Yeah, people of Walmart is pretty exaggerated. Though, the associates are as gossipy and careless as they say. As well as miserable, but that part is very understandable. Walmart has literally no compassion whatsoever. Every single thing they do, managers included, is about money. This year, Christmas bonus was barely $100 for a local supermarket- one of the busiest in the area. After making them work Black Friday on Thanksgiving (busiest shopping day of the year for US.) (They pushed their major sales events to Thursday, Thanksgiving day because they thought they'd get more money.. which was a bust, btw.) Well now I'm ranting dammit.

    As an American expat in Australia, I quickly learned that the American people are especially bad at two things: good manners, and personal diplomacy. The American/Chinese dominated global economic machine throws it's weight around without regard to regional cultures or tastes. American military has always been overly involved regional conflicts and international disagreements as well.

    To start, my suggestion is to hold your fork in your left hand, learn to speak with the local dialect, and always present your passport face down.

    I think on a personal level the majority are ordinary folk, trying to get by. They generally share a comparable moral and ethical code to the people where I'm from (the UK/Western Europe), are polite and respectful as anyone else. Many don't seem to be interested in the cultural output of other countries.

    That's all I can say, really.

        Are you suggesting the cultural output of the rest of the world (6.7 billion people) is inferior to what comes out of America, and that's why many don't seem interested?

            Personally, I love art, music, movies and film from all over the world. France, Germany, Spain, China, Japan, Brazil, Italy, India, Australia, Iceland etc. as well as my own back yard (UK) and the US...

            But if some people aren't interested in seeking that out, or assume it's all shit because it's not from America and not in their language, that's their prerogative :P

    I'm Canadian, and although I do hold some of those negative feelings toward Americans, I recognize that obviously not everyone is like that. It's VERY safe to say that the rest of the world is either terribly afraid of you, or hates you. That's pretty much a given.

    Okay if we are going to play it like that we also can say all British have bad teeth, France consists of nothing but homosexuals, and Asians cant drive and have small penises. Any educated individual will realize this is not the case.

    Also anyone who does not realize how many peace fighters and hippies there is in America probably has no real experience with Americans. Do you realize how many Animal Activists and vegetarians the US has?
