My friend thinks video games and eating are sports.

She's was rambling on about how video game tournaments are sports and how competitive eating is a sport. Is she right? I play video games in my free time and it's just a way to have fun. I also can eat a ridiculous amount of food in one sitting, but that's just me sitting on my butt and eating. She does the same and calls herself an athlete. IIN?

Well psychologically, they are like sports. The "atheletes" for competitive eating and professional gaming require the same state of mind and determination as sports athletes, so that's probably why some people compare them with sports. But I still wouldn't consider them sports. For me, a sport requires real physical exertion. So even if they are considered sports by the official organisations, I still don't consider them sports.

Chess isnt a sport though? Thinking like a dozen moves ahead of the opponent doesnt do it for you?

No, I still wouldn't consider it a sport. That's not to say that I don't respect chess and professional chess players though, I do. In fact, I respect them more than most sports athletes. It takes a special kind of mind to reach that level of chess ability, it's really impressive.

“Sports” are just games and activities that we as a culture hold in higher regard. There is no objective answer.

Well it's kinda sorta, but not really. They might consider it a sport, because there are competitions, but it's not really a sport. It's stupid is what it is!

Depends on the extreme to which you take it. Eating a shit ton of food isn't a sport, but training and getting yourself in physical condition to compete in eating contests is pretty athletic and sporty. I'm having a harder time justifying video games, since for the most part they don't require much physical activity, if any

    Yeah those are sports.

The definition of sport is competition between people for entertainment so yes those are both sports.
