They have more EGO than they have oil; which is the basis of my comment.
Mineral wealth is not what makes a state great in my book. Example: While you are correct that Texas has the biggest mineral wealth in the USA, California with little mineral wealth is a far larger economic power.
I believe that "Intellectual Development" makes a state great. What do you accomplish with the people you have that is not dependent on natural resources. I have not done a direct ranking of each State on that. But I'd like to point out that Massachusetts is a State that has done well in that regard. California as well (although they are currently dismantling parts of what made them great). Silicon Valley was built on using brain power - not natural resources.
Oh I was just talking about significance. Since you are a old school conservative its surprising you say these things about Texas. Silicon Valley is starting to move to Texas. Tesla has also moved there. They have a rich economy and low taxes and low regulations. In my opinion Texas is the most significant southern state.
