Kids thought i was weird for not having a girlfriend in 6th grade?
5th grade it wasn’t too bad, just a few incidents of being pestered about if I liked anyone, but 6th grade is a whole different story. Dating was virtually all anyone ever talked about, and kids would ask me “who do you like in this class?” Never “do you like anyone?” Always “WHO do you like?” Even after I say “no one” they would keep asking.
I remember one instance these two boys were pestering me during reading time and they asked me if I ever kissed a girl before and seemed shocked when I said “no.” And then one asked me if I played a lot of video games and when I answered yes they looked at each other like I just said something horrifying! One of them even said “we gotta get you a girlfriend.”
But by far the most obnoxious example was probably sometime in between 6th and 7th grade when one kid messaged me on Facebook (and yes we had facebooks at that age, I’ve talked about that subject before so I’m not gonna go into it) and he asked who I was dating (again, not IF I was dating, WHO I was dating) and when I said no one he kept calling me homophobic slurs until I blocked his annoying ass (I wonder if that kid was actually gay himself and liked me but didn’t know how to deal with it).
And I would often overhear conversations about relationships and everyone took them VERY seriously! It’s just so weird to me when people act like kids don’t have sexual thoughts until they’re teenagers or that preteen relationships are always so cutesy because these kids were BRUTAL about it! Only just recently did I realize that a lot of them could have been BSing me, but I find it hard to believe people are surprised kids that age think this way. (This was in 2010-11 for context).
