Is jaywalking real?

Seems like there’s lots of discretion and you’re more likely to get ticketed the more of the following apply:

1) You’re in a big city
2) Traffic is busy
3) You had other easy options besides jaywalking
4) You jaywalked in a way that was particularly dangerous and/or affected traffic

Idk anyone whos ever had one but I dont live in the city.

I've not observed every kind of jay bird out there... But, bluejays can walk.

So yes, jaywalking appears to be real, and normal.

i live in new zealand and i jaywalk all the time. Actually, most people do and it's not illegal to do so as long as you are being safe.

I live in NY. You get busted for it depending on where you live. Upstate NY won't get you a ticket. Long Island won't get you one. NYC on the other hand, you're getting one.

It's definitely not a thing in the UK. There are marked pedestrian crossings where drivers can be fined and get points on their driving licence if they don't stop when a pedestrian is indicating they want to cross or they're in the process of doing so. There are other pedestrian crossings with traffic lights that have the same force in law as any signal. But pedestrians are really pretty much free to cross the road wherever they want, even if that choice is very stupid.

Obviously, people crossing streets without due attention to traffic sometimes put others in danger due to vehicles having to swerve or abruptly brake. But I think jaywalking is really just another of those American things which proves that in the Land of the Free™, most people actually like the police to have petty reasons to get in their business and shake them down.

It's common in cities. I see people occasionally get fined for it here. I imagine it happens even more in LA or New York City.

How are you supposed to shit in the middle of the street without jaywalking? Walk signals are typically 15-45 seconds long, barely long enough to pull down your pants.

When I was in San Diego i saw someone get ticketed. I thought the jaywalker was kinda stupid theres literally a crosswalk 50 feet.

I'm more inclined to do it if there is no sidewalks in the first place (would it be concidered jaywalking?)
