Is it normal to think the didactic lectures of adults are obvious?

You go to school, and you have those teachers who like to go on about life and good character. It makes me wonder if they're stereotyping us as teenagers who know nothing about morals and virtues, who are not capable of profound thought, who only think about going to the mall and movies and spending money or whatever. What's a typical teenager? Is the importance of empathy not obvious? Am I precocious or are these teachers just hypocritical and ignorant adults who don't understand the next generation?

Is It Normal?

  • You sound like you like to think of yourself as mature for your age. Consider this: if you really understand the importance of empathy, or just being a decent person, you should have more patience with older people. Instead of criticizing those who have had more life experience, listen to them.

If you really think you are above listening, then just keep in mind that not everyone is. There are tons of kids in high school who need to hear those kinds of talks.

    • I agree. You also have to remember most teachers have been teaching for a LONG while. So the usually just go on auto pilot when teaching in the classroom. And don't bother getting to know their students.

I'm not so far away from the high school ages, but I know that there are a lot of students now who lack empathy or morals to a frightening degree.

  • hmph, they stereotype because nearly every fucking teenager they see act like total spoiled douchebags, and since their judging due to majority one can't get mad at that.

  • Not all teenagers are the same, there are some really mature and worldly ones out there, but a big majority of them are exceptionally narcissistic and naive.

I think some adults make the mistake of thinking ALL young people are idiots who cannot manage any level of empathy or morality. It's an unfair label.

Also, a lot of young people are extremely idealistic, which makes it difficult to rationalize with them, so maybe some adults just give up on them.

There is also the whole Generation Y or Generation Me thing... You should Google it.

  • Much of the "morality" being espoused would be considered cruel and bizarre in other countries and other times.

  • think about a world where everyone else besides you doesn't know enough about morality... it's scary!

  • what your teacher doesn't know is who knows what. sure, you get it, but does everyone? plus, if their talks are in the syllabus, they have to cover them anyway.

looks like you don't know these teachers any better than they know you.
