Is it normal to learn a language very quickly and somewhat randomly?

When I was young, i was bilingual but since I never used my Spanish I forgot it and lost my ability to speak it. Now, I'm taking Spanish in high school and I am getting some pretty good grades without trying too hard. Perhaps some of my childhood Spanish is helping me out with learning it? It has been about 3 months and I have Spanish class once a day and I am pretty good at speaking it. I can have a decent conversation over dinner with my mom and watch a lot of videos in Spanish I don't have the best grades in class (A's, but not A+) but I know the most Spanish in our class. Is it normal to learn the language so quickly? I can already understand about half of what is said in Spanish T.V. shows and the like. Any chance the Spanish somehow came bacK? Didn't think it was possible. Thanks.

  • Yes, it did "come back". It is said that the best age for acquiring a language is early childhood and even if the language is not used for a very long time, it is stored somewhere in your brain and you're able to activate it any time later in life. You probably have good pronunciation as well. When children are developing their language/general speaking skills and incorporate sounds that are different than the ones in their mother tongue, the ability to reproduce those sounds properly remains. Learning a third language should also be extremely easy.

    • Yes, muchas gracias. I believe you're right because I do have some pretty good pronunciation and have a minuscule American accent when speaking Spanish (I think.) And yes, I hope you're right about the third language easily part. I have been studying Norwegian now for awhile (I know it is an easy language for English speakers to learn) but I seem to be learning it quickly as well. Thanks for the comment.
