Is it normal to hug yourself imagining you're hugging someone else?

I've recently been finding myself hugging myself while imagining hugging someone else. I often find myself choking back tears at the same time. I don't know if I'm just lonely or if I'm just dealing with something else. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Help me understand, Dr Tommy. We are lonely socially neglected misfits but have the same basic need for touch as everyone else. How does one adapt to this unhealthy and unfortunate isolation? You're the doc, me man. We're thirsty for an answer.

Seeing as I’m neither lonely, socially neglected, or a hugger....you give them a useful answer.

          Well okay. I'll say,

          1. Wank
          2. Play nude volleyball at the beach.
          3. Run around naked in a thunderstorm.

          What do you think?

Is this as a replacement for the self hugging thing, or additions?

As an addition. Just speculating here, but starvation of tactile stimulus would seem to cause the same damage to the lymbic system that sensory deprivation of sight, hearing, and smell do to the brain in general.

Sometimes I'm jealous of slimy worms that squirm around with their slippery little friends. I would love to get naked in a giant plastic bag, cover myself in corn oil, and squirm around with a female companion. Of course, you're so dashing and attractive, that nurses back at the hospital who had hungry eyes probably begged you for it all the time.

It's normal, especially after the pandemic started.:( It sounds like you're pretty isolated, at least in one way or another. You can have others around and still basically be "isolated", too. But yes, it is normal unfortunately, that doesn't mean you just need to accept that you'll always feel that way though. I don't know your situation, all I know is that situations and feelings do change over time, and that you do have a say in it. Good luck, I hope you feel better soon

I do the same thing. I think its really important to do it now when we cant get physical touch from others.

    Quite common for some people.

  • Try taking a hot shower instead - this has been known to lessen the feeling of loneliness in some.

I only voted no because it is far less physically awkward for me to just hug a pillow.
